Asylum and immigration act

If you have nothing to hide, then really what is the problem?..or perhaps when placing your vote you could consider how the dwindling workforce is going to pay for the burgeoning number of retirees. (I can't see a way out without using immigrant workers personally)
I would rather use the million people currently out of work to fulfill these positions for the mean time. Or at the very least attract immigrants from 'friendly' poorer countries with a similar culture to our own. Such as Poland.A bargain is only a bargain if you would have brought it anyway!0 -
...and how exactly are the large groups of out of work in, say, the north east, be made to work in the densely populated regions with loads of vacancies such as the south east? ship them away from their families? forced migration?
Polish 'immigrants' as you call them, are quite entitled to work here (being EU citizens) just as we can take jobs in France, Denmark, Poland etc.
Perhaps you could name a nation that provides 'unfriendly' immigrants to Britain?0 -

if needs be!, it's called move where the jobs are. Why do some people not want to move away from family rather living off state benefit, whilst others work hard, move around the country through no choice??? if there are jobs in the south east, guess that's where people need to be too.....
as for the OP you don't mention what industry you work in, but guidelines change and people can be asked for pieces of paper, be proud to show where you're from and give them the paper! if you feel it wasn't handled well, mention that to them at the same time!! It may be one person, who is tired of having to ask people for the same thing and getting the same reaction....0 -
how exactly do you propose moving around the country when you are on state benefit?
come on kids, lets all save up our pocket money so we can take all our possessions down south, and move school, to work in a service industry job? WHY?
the tories shafted the regions of this country by decimating manufacturing and further centralising the economy onto the south east.0 -
I've never been asked for these details once in a job, but have certainly had to provide them before being employed and when I've joined any agency and the standard response is its to prove you're not an illegal immigrant.... Think a little perspective is needed here. When it comes down to it, it's only bits of paper that's being asked for. Different if they wanted to prove identity by a physical exam or they wanted to see a mole on your bum.

Don't sweat the small stuff....one day a really serious issue will rear up, save your energy for the life changing stuff.

Can't see a problem myself, after all you have to provide these details just to open a bank account nowadays

Unfortunately, it is not really good enough for the employer to use his initiative. There was a time when businesses could take "informed risks" - i.e. they made their own decisions based on their instinct etc and accepted the consequences if they were found to be wrong.
In the current climate, the "offence" is not so much employing an illegal worker, but not having the right paperwork to show that the person is not an illegal worker.
It is quite possible to "get away" with employing illegal workers if you have "paperwork" which purports to show they weren't illegal (as long as the paperwork is not obviously dodgy), whereas conversely it is quite possible to be prosecuted for not having the proper paperwork, even if you aren't actually employing any "illegals".
The world truly has gone completely bonkers!!!!0 -
Nancy, this leaves a nasty taste in the mouth and I think you should challenge the basis on which the request is being made. And I think you should do it with the power of your union behind you. If you aren't in a union then I strongly urge you to join one. Employers get away with this sort of nonsense (and between the lines it reads more like racist nastinesss) because workers don't have strength on their own. Together we do. https://www.unison.org.uk is a good starting point for info about your rights.
Presumably your employer has your National Insurance number, and this is evidence enough that you are working legally.
Good luck.0 -
I don't believe a National Insurance number proves anything about your legal entitlement to work in this country. If you don't have one, your employer can apply for one, and AFAIK does not have to 'prove' anything when they do so. If you don't have one when you start work, the employer can use a temporary NINO.amarillo_2004 wrote:Presumably your employer has your National Insurance number, and this is evidence enough that you are working legally.
If you are really the only employee who has been asked for this, then your suspicions may be well-founded, but how do you know you are the only one? Have you talked to anyone in HR and asked if they check the same information for all employees? And if not, why not? Appearance and accent don't prove anything!Signature removed for peace of mind0
