Re: the sorting office notification , there's no way I would tell the Royal Mail staff that I was going away. Given their previous and ongoing habit of half opening birthday cards etc to see if there's anything valuable inside!

To be fair, I don't know if this interference is done by staff at the sorting office or the collecting postie or the delivering postie, but it's definitely people within the mail system.

With you absolutely on that one. And for the same reason I wouldn't be telling the police, either.

If you have flower baskets and tubs in the front, get a neighbour to water them.

Looks pretty obvious no-one's at home if you have half dead plants when they look healthy.
