Hair Stripper

Hi
I naturally have dark brown hair with a red undertone but I have been coloring my hair for the past year to a more red color - not quite pillar box red but near enough.
I find the color fades too quickly and my roots show through fast so I have decided to go back to my original color.
The salon said if they have to strip my hair before they dye it then it will cost £40 to do (no cutting involved) but I have seen a product on the market that says you can do it at home for a fraction of the cost - i just wondered if anyone had done this before, going similar shades and wanted to see if they could recommend which was best - DIY or Salon?
Hope someone can help

I know several people that have used it. I don't think you can dye straight over the top though - you have to leave it a while and everyone has ended up with patchy, orange hair.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0

i'm all for money saving & i've been home hair colouring forever, but, for something like this, i'd invest some money in a salon treatment as i really don't think it's diy job.0

If you can afford it, then going to the salon is usually the best idea as they are the professionals. Saying this, I have used the ColourB4 colour stripper many times and it has worked well for me. I have a bright colour with bleached hair underneath, and the colour stripper usually takes me back to blonde hair. If you use it on natural hair with one colour over the top then it may take you back to slightly lighter than your natural colour though. No more goo hoarding!

back to the topic, does it work with hair that is partially gray (in case I change my mind again)

I striped a magenta colour using colour B4 ended up a mix of bright violet& blonde second box turned it blue& blonde, smelt awful for days afterwards it did eventually fade out after a few weeks but it was a stargazey colour so wasn't permanent.0

Thank you all for your replies.
I have attempted to bleach my hair before (only a strand) and ended up with a strawberry blond patch as the bleach took all of the color and left my red undertone - which is why the hairdresser told me i'll never be able to go blondand I can take red so easily but will find it difficult to cover the red.
The last time I put a dark brown over the red, you couldn't tell I had even done it. I think i am going to leave it till next month and just cope with dodgy roots until then and visit the hairdresser. It will be £40 max if she has to strip it - if she can just cover it - it will be cheaper.Car Paid in full - 10/06/2016 :j0 -
I bleach my hair (then cover it over with a semi permanent bright colour) and the only peroxide I've found that will strip my very very dark brown hair completely from the roots down, even with the bright colour still in is Directions 40% peroxide kit. It doesn't leave me gingery like every other one I've tried, it literally leaves me white blonde.
I get mine from Katesclothing.com, I've only found it in 'alternative' type online shops, but be warned, the mixture doesn't add up to much and for my chin length hair I always need at least 2, but it does the job
Sorry OP, I know this doesn't help you with your original question!0 -

To those that have used Colour B4, how does it affect the condition of your hair? I want to lighten up my hair a bit but it's got many years worth of permanent dark brown dye on it (I'm quite grey). If I go ahead I'll probably use the Colour B4 Extra Strength, but I'm wavering as although I know it's not got bleach in it, I'm worried that it'll make my already dry hair brittle and even dryer.0

I am reading this thread with interest as I am in a similar position. I have naturally brown hair with a fair bit of grey (I think because I haven seen it since I was about 9)!
I dye my hair with a shade 6.66 (intense red) and I want to strip the colour so I can go lighter (shade in the 8 range).
I have heard that the colour b4 leaves you with a rotten egg smell when damp. Has any one had their colour removed professionally and does that smell as well? How long do you have to wait before applying another permanent colour? If my hair is grey enough, I want to go lilac but I don't think it it there yet. Thanks0
