e-on my constantly high monthly bill

hey guys i'm currently signed up on a direct debit with e-on and each monthly bill is a set rate of £80 or more.. "if i use under, would i be entitled to a lower bill?"

The set £80 p/month is all they would offer me.

personally i think £80 a month is still way too high for my 1 bed flat, whereas my friends who have 3 bedroom houses use around £40 - £50 per month..

i have storage heaters which are renown for using a lot of electricity which are hardly on, charging up overnight when my rates are 'supposed' to be lower.

Do you have the emmersion heater for the hot water on 24/7? That is sometimes something that gets forgotten. Switching lights off when you leave rooms. Not leaving things on standby.

You are going to use more than your mates if your mates are gas & electric. Around 60% of your bill is for heating & hot water.

Even for a 1 bed flat I would think a £80-£90 would be reasonable given your all electric.

Really??? I'm in a one bed electric flat and I pay approx £100 a quarter so that's under £40 a month!

Its useless talking about your usage in monetary terms.
Start reading your meter weekly and build up a picture of your consumption in Kwh.
If you have storage heaters you should be on and economy 7 tarrif or similar, so check your day and night units.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

This ^^ - unless your bills are based upon actual readinsg and depending within which season - that needs to be your starting point.

Hi ath92 and welcome to the forum.

Thought I'd pop on with a few details about how our Monthly Direct Debits work.

These arrangements look to spread the cost of bills evenly over the year. Sometimes, especially in the summer, accounts will be in credit.

We aim, though, for accounts to have as near as possible to a zero balance by the time of the annual review. At this time, any credit over a fiver will automatically be refunded to your bank.

The monthly amounts are based on current prices and past usage.

To help keep things as accurate as possible, make sure your bills are based on actual meter readings and not estimates. If we've used estimates, let us have up to date readings. We'll be happy to re-bill the account and review the Direct Debit.

Has your Direct Debit been covering the usage? Are there any arrears on the account?

If there are arrears, these will be included in the payment arrangement and spread over the next few months. Where arrears are paid off, Direct Debits can be re-set to cover the ongoing usage only.

To help keep things on track, we review Direct Debits each quarter. We'll only make changes, though, at the six monthly and annual reviews. At other times, we'll let you know if we think there should be a change but leave it up to you to decide if you want to do this.

If you've registered with our website, there's a facility on there to give you a bit more control over payments. This is particularly useful if your circumstances change.

It's called the 'Direct Debit Manager' and lets you change your monthly payments by up to 20 per cent up or down, provided the account is billed up to the latest meter readings. Up to 5 per cent up or down without readings.

Before completing the change, we'll tell you how much we think the account will be in debit/credit by the time of the annual review if the change is put through but usage doesn't alter accordingly.

As penrhyn says, storage heaters usually work with a two rate Economy 7 meter so make sure you're on a tariff that suits this.

Also, make sure you know when the cheaper off peak times are active. We can quickly tell you these times if you give us a call. Try and use as much electricity as possible during these times.

Totally understand the off peak times aren't particularly sociable so timers might help here.

I'd also pop your usage in kWh on to one of the comparison sites. This will list all your options, both with us and with the other suppliers.

Keeping control of your usage isn't always straightforward. There's quite a bit of advice to help with this on our website. In particular, have a look at the Saving Energy Toolkit.

Sorry if I've flooded you with information ath92 but hope you find it useful. Let me know if you need any more details as happy to help.
