multiple address issue

I current have a flat with shared access which has a mortgage. Therefore this debit and council tax and on local voters roll are listed at this address. However due to security reasons I have never changed my bank or credit cards or loans to this address. But need to change credit cards to lower interest to help my finances. Will I get rejected or as I have some credit history at both addresses. Reluctant to get bank and credit cards to my flat as sometimes my mail can sit for days or weeks if on holiday unsecured at a open door. But cant be on 2 voters roles. My mail goes to the family house where i previously live prior to purchasing my flat. They are not in the same area. i pay all my bills on time and have never defaulted. But feel this has restricted myself in moving to lower interest credit cards. Please advise.

It sounds like you already have multiple addresses if you have electoral roll at one address and credit accounts at another address.

Appreciating your difficulties with post, the best advice I could give is that you need to choose an address you want to 'live' at for the purposes of credit (which would always obviously preferably be the same address you actually live at!) and stick to it.

You should also check your current credit file/s and see what your 'personal information' is showing as. You need all lenders to have the same information to avoid gone away markers, CIFAS etc.

You could explore more difficult options such as Royal Mail redirections but personally I have found them unreliable, costly and I'm not sure whether they would even agree to redirect electoral roll/council information, for example.

Thanks. Credit cards and bank are pre purchase of flat. Flat is more a work base location. But had to register for council tax, energy bills, and have mortgage on flat. Although I always regarded this as a commuting flat and not my home. I know it would be easier to get credit to just change all my finances over but my post man just puts the mail through a communal door which doesn't lock. My neighbour is periodically absent and cant rely on the mail being picked up when I not there.

If you obtain a copy of your credit reports do they list both addresses and list your mortgage/some utilities at your flat as well as the bank/cards at the old address?

If so then hopefully the multiple addresses won't cause an issue on application (though I would appy for the new credit product at the flat).

If/when accepted for a new card you could then always choose to amend the address on the new account to your parent's address.

Have you tried the eligibility checker for new 0% cards on this site to give you an indication as to whether you are likely to be accepted?

Yes, but if you haven't changed your addresses with your old accounts then they will be showing on your credit file as current. If you make a further 'new' application to what is effectively an 'old' address (given you have since registered on the electoral roll somewhere else) it is going to look very odd to lenders and potentially make create fraud markers. Although you could probably deal with these later, it has the potential to create hassle. So it's important to have an address that you live at for the purposes of credit (which is the same as your electoral roll address) and stick to it. You need a 'main' home address.

If the post is a problem for you, presumably it is a problem for other residents in your building. Is there a management company? Is there a better way of handling post?

I live in a communal building with six flats. Each morning, we have two post deliveries which are put into a communal letterbox. The first person to reach the post takes it out of the letterbox and places it on a desk by the door, which we then pick up individually when we arrive back (for most of us, after work) If someone is away, one of us will pop the post under their door. It's never been a problem...

Many people have a second home or pied a terre.

Whilst you have to register for utilities, council tax, etc for the second home, you also need to be registered at your primary residence for council tax.

Usually people will also vote in their primary residence location too (you can get a postal vote if you work Thursdays so will be at the other location on voting days) This is because people usually care more about the locality they have their primary residence in, so want to vote local councillors, MPs, etc for that area.

Not sure what the issue is? If you have a primary residence, just apply using that address, ... and especially if the alternative address is not a safe address for delivery of financial documents.

You say you have a mortgage on the flat. Did you inform the mortgage provider that this property was not considered by you to be your main residential address?

Does the insurance company know that too?
