    This story doesn't stack up.

    So, what's your scenario then?

I don't see how it doesn't stack up. But I'm willing to bet that the customer DID receive a notification of cancellation, probably via e-mail.

Yes, I'll bet a cancellation notice was issued.

Taxing the car in April with no valid insurance doesn't make sense.

How did they pay on the website for 23 years.

Why would they get a notice of cancellation if the policy lapsed on it's normal expiry date?

So you agree the story doesnt stack up! There is an essential fact missing from their story. More than told the OP that the payment was made late which suggests they did not make the payment before the policy was due for renewal.

If they logged on day before, renewed policy and paid premium ok then we would not be discussing this now.

Not very MSE to spend one's own time and money querying an unsolicited and unexpected cheque!

Leave it to the drawer to come and query it - at best they won't and at worst you had an interest free loan!!

How do you gain interest on a cheque sitting in a drawer?

23 years is a long time.

I suspect More Than didn't accept website payments as far back as 1991... if they even existed!
