Refund to cancelled credit card

I bought a Wowcher offer for a boiler service in January. The voucher is valid until mid July. I phoned the provider to book it this morning but the number is unavailable. I think the company may have gone out of service and have emailed Wowcher to ask them to refund the money to my credit card if that is the case.

I have just realised that I paid for it on my Aqua card which was cancelled when the 3% cashback ended and has a zero balance. Does anyone know what will happen if Wowcher do refund it to my Aqua card? Will it be accepted and if so will Aqua send me the money or will I have to contact them to request this? I can still access the Aqua account online so would be able to see the credit if and when it appears. However, I don't know how much longer I will have that access for.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Well I had a slightly different experience as my credit was a goodwill payment from Aqua, but it is currently showing as a credit amount on the account.

As long as you didn't sign up for paperless statements (not sure if you can if the account is allegedly closed ... but it shows up as a possibility on my online account) then they will send you a statement every month showing the credit balance.

My case is currently with the FOS, but you need to allow Aqua the opportunity to resolve any complaint first

Thanks for your reply. I don't have a complaint with Aqua as the issue is with Wowcher and hopefully will be resolved soon.

I hope your case is resolved to your satisfaction.

I had a refund to a cancelled American express and got really stressed about it as I couldn't get the supplier (BA but overseas call centre) to refund it to my current card. When I called Amex they said that the card number although cancelled remains mine and that when this happens they just send out a statement or wait for the call to explain and then ask you how you want your refund (direct back to bank or cheque) - hopefully Aqua will be the same.

Of course, I fully understand you have no cause for complaint to Aqua yet.

I was answering your query as to what would happen if/when Wowcher agree to refund you, and they use the Aqua card you initially paid with :)

It might be wise to ask Wowcher if they will refund to a card you still have. Most retailers don't worry about it being the same card, and it'll probably be a lot less hassle for you.
