Sons old pc runs W2000 and i'm trying to get it online for his schoolwork etc;)
My pc is wireless via a netgaer 834G router and I've got a netgear usb adapter for him.
The installation disc works but the computer wont recognise the new usb hardware.--
It wont do it through add and remove new hardware either--
Am I missing somethig??
Any help /suggestions please?

I know nothing about wireless systems, but have you tried turning the comp off and starting it again with the new hardware already plugged in and connected it may find new hardware then.

I haven't tried that yet as i've followed the instructions so far;)--It may be a

pc fault though, because i've installed it on a pc with xp and it's fine.

The old pc with W2000 doesn't recognise anything I plug into the usb ports.:o

I think that win98 and 2000 need usb to be installed.
    Xp has usb drivers included.
Was there a CD supplied with the adapter?
    Check manufacturers website.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Yes ,we got a cd with the adapter, but it gets the software and drivers installed then says to connect the adapter and wait for the new hardware wizard--I think he's on holiday:D-it just doesn't happen--I'll have to try and get round it somehow.;)

Assuming drivers are all installed OK.
    Turn off PC,
    Plug in adapter,
Reboot - New hardware wizard should start.

Thats all I can suggest, it was the way I got a USBdrive to work with Win98.

I've been trying it again tonight and it seems that the pc cannot find any new hardware, even though I know it's plugged in.
I know that the software is ok because i've now installed the adapter on my own pc.
I'll try your tip tomorrow and see how it goes--Thanks:D

Just had a look on my Win2000 machine - if you go into Settings, Control Panel, System, click the Hardware tab, then go into Device Manager you'll get a list of installed devices.

Should have something like "Universal Serial Bus controllers" - click the + box and you should have (at least) 2 lines a "PCI to USB Host controller" and a "USB Root Hub". If there is a problem with the drivers there will be a large yellow question mark against the device.

I don't remember having to install anything specifically for the USB by the way.

As well as checking the Device Manager, look in the USB controllers properties and make sure the "enable this device" box is ticked.
