Digital Baby Monitor

Options
Hi guys...any deals going or advice on baby monitors...have just bought the angelcare from argos but doesnt seem to be working very well...i think that there is a lot of interference around.....and also, able to hear next door on it (they have a 1 year old compared to our 4 day old!!!)...was wandering if this would be improved by getting a fancy digital monitor? Any deals going on them...am after one with the sensor pad if possible...

    Hi,

I tested some baby monitors for a baby magazine and the Angel Care one was absolutely terrible. The reception was poor, the feedback was terrible and it felt and looked cheap and nasty. :(

I also tested Tomee Tippee which is a cheapish monitor and came out second worst, it was almost as bad as the Angel Care one but not quite.

Next was the Tomy Walkabout which was a pretty good monitor if not a little bulky looking. The sound quality was averge and the nightlight was useful, not a bad mid-price range unit.

I also got a Philips digital monitor with camera...this was amazing! You plug it into your telly and you can watch your baby as he/she sleeps. It has night vision and you can see baby really clearly. I would never have bought one of these but after using it I loved it. There were times when I thought my baby was asleep but she was quiety playing in her cot (only a few months old) ...it was lovely.

By far my favourite, and the one that I have now, is the BT Digital Baby Monitor Plus. It looks nice and has temperature display, talkback facility (so you can talk to baby) it had music which you can play from the parent unit, you can switch the light on via the parent unit and the sound quality is absolutely amazing. It's rechargeable and has visual display on the parent unit. I really recommend this monitor. You can set the maximum temperature so that it alerts you if babys room becomes too hot and you can control everything from the parent unit.

As far as sensor pads are concerned I wouldn't bother at all. As soon as baby learns to move him/herself (as early as 6-8 weeks) the alarm goes off every 5 minutes. If you've had problems with baby stopping breathing then your midwife can get hold of a proper sensor pad for you. I don't think that one of these shop bought pads has ever saved a babys life and if I thought that my baby would stop breathing then I wouldn't rely on one of these to alert me.

I think that it's ok to spend the extra money on a digital monitor, after all you may use it for a few years and they're great for when you're in the garden over summer and baby's having a nap, you know that you can rely on them picking up every little sound. There isn't that constant hiss/buzz from them like the non-digital kind.

    good luck x

I got the cheapest one from argos and it was fine. Manufacturers are preying on the insecurities of parents, especially first-timers. I had my daughter sleep in my room for the first year, much more effective than a baby monitor!

    LOL :D

I plugged mine into the kitchen telly (as we couldn't plug it in at the same time as Sky TV) so I just switched on for a look if I was popping into the kitchen...... but I was lucky as I had another monitor in the living room.

I did like to watch her sleep though and it was especially good when she went through a phase of getting her legs stuck through the bars of her cot . I could see if she was really stuck or if she was just whingeing because she was tired.

They're certainly not necessary but they're one of those things that's really nice to have if you can afford it.

We didn't have a monitor at all - didn't want to buy it before baby was born, and never got round to getting it after the birth!

Fair enough, if you've got an enormous house (we don't :D ) you'll need one, or if the baby has problems, but other than that I don't think it's so crucial. Our little boy was in our room for about a month, and even when he went into his room, he's always been so loud there's no need for a monitor! :)

And I know a little girl who slept on one of those sensor pad thingies until she was 1, even though there was no reason whatsoever for her to have it  As someone said, it's not easy being a first-time parent...
