Vets are not the NHS ! The only money they get is from the patients owners, who may only come in, maybe 1 a year for boosters.

The equipment they have for surgery, is the same as used in the NHS, so will have to be paid for.

In the vicinity of me, there are 23 Vets surgeries, there is one NHS Hospital. He is not going to let you have his authorisation for medication free and then go elsewhere and stop him having some payback from it !

Didn't you have Insurance for the cat? The insurance I had for Rusty, paid me back for his medication, so it didn't cost me anything, apart from the premium.

Yes of course I had insurance, but it has all been used up!!

Caring for a cat who is a diabetic is not bloody cheap especially at vets prices!!

I cant reinsure him as its classed as a pre-existing condition and no one will cover for him!!

    Too much a month!!

    x 2 boxes of caninsulin syringes at £15 a time = £30 a month.

    x 2 bottles of caninsulin insulin £20 a month.

x 4 boxes of diet wet food at £48 per month.

Blood testing every 3 months at £48 a time.

    X1 bag 3.5 dried food every 6 months £38.

With Animed online a small bottle of the insulin is £3.61 compared with £12 at the vets, a box of needles from animed is £9.10 compared with £15 at the vets, a big bag of the special dried food is £26 from animed yet the vet wants £34 for the same stuff, you can see my point about the vets well over pricing!!

I am seriously thinking of writing a letter to my vets to ask why there is such a price difference and for the fact that they have increased prices 3 times in 6 months which I feel is unacceptable!!

Again, this is too late for you, but were you with Petplan?

I go with Petplan for this very reason, as the insurance is £x per year, not £x per condition like many pet insurances. People seem to find this out too late, especially with illnesses which aren't cureable.

One way I could help is with food, possibly. I have my cats on a zero sugar, zero grain, 99% meat diet from a German food company. They do not have diabetes but theyve always been on this to hopefully prevent illnesses like that, but I do know people who use it to manage diabetes in cats also, and that costs me £43 a month for 2 cats (I do not feed any dry)

It may not be any use to you, just putting it out there. I know vet prescription diets are insanely pricey, but personally I find them a bit of a con...

I've had him since he was six weeks old.

No one else would want the cost of his upkeep.

PDSA are useless because I dont get housing benefit!!

He's old now anyway being 14 and he wouldnt cope in a strange household!

I was originally with More Than and they covered me for up to £7000 for each and every illness.

I might ask the vet if he can go on the food you mention and see what he says.

    Thanks.

With the prices you have quoted for all the medication, the vet charging you just under £14 for a 6 month prescription means that buying them from the internet is costing you a hell of a lot less.

You are winning hands down here. If it is a matter of not being able to buy 6 months together, have a word with the website and see if they can send them out 1 month at a time until the 6 months is up.

The Vet has his cost base to pay for, staff, equipment, rent, energy etc, so £14 is not bad at all for 6 months.
