Wooden front door advice

Hi,

We are getting our house renovated and we are going to be installing a wooden front door. Has anyone else done this and is there any other advice apart from what is mentioned here, http://content.met.police.uk/Article/Front-door/1400012029686/1400012029686

I would like to collate all this information to pass on to the joiner.

Also, what are your thoughts on door handle? To have or not. We have always had a door handle but some houses I have been to simply have the normal lock and a deadlock in their wooden door. My main concern is locking myself out. At least with a handle I can shut the door so the wind doens't blow it open and let pets out, whereas with the latch lock I would have to set the latch to open when outside. Is this correct? Either that or always have a key with me at all times :-)

Many thanks,
C

Make sure you have a weather board on the bottom to stop water ingress. Sometimes called a stormguard.

Think you mean a "water board", weatherboard is cladding to sides of buildings. :D

I have had both types of front door, and would always prefer a door handle, for the reasons of convenience that you mention.

Any new door should be insulated to achieve a Door Set Energy Rating (DSER) of E or better or a U-Value of 1.8 or better.

A standard door would be about 3.

Thanks for the advice! I will have to rethink the handle thing as I think it could be a bug bearer.

Security-wise, handle or no handle, with dead bolt.

You can use a mortice sashlock or deadlock (the sashlock is the one with the handle and latch, the deadlock is the lock only) with a thumbturn on the inside for easy escape in a fire.

A second lock for additional security. Mount the locks at 1/3 and 2/3 the door height to stop the door being kicked or shouldered in.

If you use Euro cylinder locks it's easy to get both locks on the same key (keyed alike) and to change the cylinder if you lose your keys.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

Thanks Owain. Didn't think of sash lock with door handle.
