Currys - Make sure you keep the receipt!!

My parents bought a posh telly last summer. All singing, all dancing, LED 3D, voice controlled etc etc. Amazing picture. Cost an arm and a leg.
A month or so ago a black spot appeared on the screen, and off they went to the store they bought it from to report the fault and request a repair.
Parents gave their name and address and the record was called up on the computer. They got the shock of their life when they were told it was already out of warranty!
Turns out that Curry's registered the warranty in January 2013 eight months before they sold it to my parents!!
The assistant said that there was nothing they could do unless they could produce the receipt, which luckily they could do, but this is a warning to other customers to always retain the receipt and don't just rely on Curry's keeping records of the sale.

Something doesn't quite add up here.
Currys can find receipt details using the name & postcode - which they would of taken for a TV.
Manufacturers warranties usually start from the day the goods were shipped to the wholesaler in the absence of a verified purchase date (i.e. why the encourage you to "register" the product with them) - but the protection provided by legislation against the retailer obviously starts from the date of purchase.Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -
Another reason not to pay by cash for major purchases.
If you can't find your receipt then you will be able to obtain a copy of your bank or credit card statement which will state the date, amount of the purchase and where the purchase was made. I have used this before when returning goods as proof of purchase if I have lost a receipt. The store should then be able to cross check their records if necessary. Don't ever be fobbed off.0 -
Yes, as above.
Currys would be pulling up your receipt info, not your manufacturer info. It may be worth going back and clarifying this with them. That will give the date that the purchase went through the tills to your mum and dad, and will ignore any manufacturer warranty.
That said, it being out of warranty won't make a real difference to their remedy. If they want a repair, they will need to provide :
Proof of purchase - so assuming the receipt is lost, a credit card or bank statement showing the purchase, and
A Independent Engineers Report - stating that the fault is inherent. You will need to pay for this, but if it finds the fault is inherent, then Currys will refund this cost.
Then you can ask for a remedy under the Sales of Goods act.
It may be worth ringing the Currys helpline and speaking to someone there too. They have an out of warranty team (which this technically is, as I bet the warranty requires a receipt) who should be able to advise further0 -
Curry's are going to carry out the repair. But they said that they would only do so because my parents produced the receipt. Why the warranty was registered eight months before my parents bought the receipt is unknown. The shop assistant couldn't tell them either. You had me at your proper use of "you're".0

Could it have been bought by someone else and returned?0

Samsung?
Because they log the manufacturing dates for each model, and by the time it has shipped to the UK, got to the main warehouse, sat around there for a bit, gone out to store, sat there until bought, it can be quite some time between when Samsung say it was produced.
For example, I booked in a Samsung TV bought July 2013 today. Samsung had it down as manufactured in March 2012. Just sent them the receipt, and it was all good.Squirrel! If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.
Now 20% cooler0 -

No-one tells them when the TV gets sold etc, so until you register the product, they've no idea when the data of purchase is - so use the only date they've got - the date when it left their hands.
Even without the receipt, Currys should still of been able to find the receipt (unless the purchaser gave a fake name / address and couldn't remember where or how they bought it...)Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0
