I hate my job!! Help - Desperate to get out

I have been in my job for just over 2 years. The first year was great as I was responsible for the introducing marketing to the company and due to this there was a shed load of work to do.
As its a small company it was quite difficult to get everyone on board because they were basically used to working to no structure, which means they did what they liked. With the managing directors support I was able to implement structures but these have been constantly changed to fit the managements requirements, meaning that in a way there was no consistent structure.
As a result I've slowly realised that every thing I have helped to put in place has slowly but surely whittled to nothing. It's like anything I have done doesn't exist and I have been pigeon holed as a receptionist.
There is still no structure and I waste 8 hours a day struggling to find work to do. I honestly do my best to continue with my role but my manager is never here and nobody else understands what it is my role entails. It all seems so pointless. I have been applying for jobs and I have had a few interviews with no success.
Everybody else in the company wants to leave and whenever I do manage to put work out that is a part of my role I get criticised by other employees because they don't like what I'm sending out, even though I have been directed to by my manager (which is not very often.) I hate everything about being here and it feels like I am wasting my life.
All the jobs I have applied for are for larger companies with a better structure, good working environment and great pay but I feel like my negative frame of mind is somehow stopping me from expressing my enthusiasm for the roles I want. I feel completely stifled at work and I can't leave because I would prefer to have a new job first. I'm at my wits end and no-one seems to understand. Help!? Is there any advice people have at all. I feel like i'm slowly going crazy and losing my career that I've worked so hard or

What advice can people really give ? If your not happy there the only thing you can do is look for a new job
Good luck0 -
This is so often the case with marketing - people who aren't "into marketing" might think it's a great idea to hire somebody for it, but as they've no real understanding of it, it's often then changed so it's not effective/not working ....mrsmarieanne wrote: »...I was responsible for introducing marketing to the company ....these have been constantly changed to fit the managements requirements, meaning that in a way there was no consistent structure.

You need to work as a small cog in a bigger firm where you're just doing the work you enjoy and not fighting the fires at the top.....
I work in Internet marketing ... it's even worse there!0 -

Yes, it appears to be a no-brainer to me.
Continue with your job search.
Probably wise to stay in your job until you find something new, as your current employers do not appear to be unpleasant ones going by what you have said. Just that they cannot offer what you are looking for.0 -
What advice can people really give ?
I suppose I was hoping for some kind of advice from a recruiters view point - every time I have an interview I try to be myself but I'm fully aware that due to being stifled at work I feel self conscious about my actual achievements because I really I don't feel like there are any which results in me being unable to sell myself confidently.
Whoa me eh?
Thanks for the Good Luck... It's needed

Yep a total no brainer. You need to get on the search wagon and look for something better. Indeed.com, reed.co.uk, monster.co.uk. Are just a few sites that are good.
Good luck! x Life is too short... To not be YOU!

Stick with it for now - it's much easier to find work when you're already in a job. It's a sad situation but any job is better than having no job - I was unemployed for six months and ended up applying for anything! Thank god I have a lovely job now - my worst day here is a thousand times better than my best day when on the dole. For the sake of your sanity, how about upskilling through online courses or volunteering in your own time? Think about what you want to do and lay the groundwork to move on to something better.0

I know how that feels.
I'm bad at interviews due to nerves and anxiety etc, but another issue is that I really haven't achieved anything in life (at least anything a potential employee would be interested in. I mean, I had a threesome once which is an achievement of sorts!)
So I can't give any examples to the typical job interview questions and I can't really sell myself in general.I_Can_Haz_Job? wrote: »Stick with it for now - it's much easier to find work when you're already in a job. What do you do out of interest?
I'm always interested when people seem to like their job.
I just can't imagine it.
Every job i've ever had I literally pray for the day/week to hurry up so that the weekend can begin!0 -
i'll swap with mine
after 1 week you'll be wanting to swap back0 -
Yes thanks to everyone for their help so far, this is my first post and everyone's been great.
I have been looking for work and I've had 5 interviews so far, as I say with little success. I want to work in a university within marketing, recruitment or international recruitment or admissions.
I have applied for dozens and I mean dozens of roles since October - I even came 2nd in one, damn the guy who got it lol!
Ive also registered on numerous educational job sites and other recruitment sites but nothing.
I'm sure something will happen soon. I just feel like i'm losing my skill set so I will look into online course, just need to keep going
If anybodies got any advice about working in Higher Education etc that that would be really great.
Thanks again all!0 -
I work in Higher Education, and have done for a number of years.
There are a number of problems regarding looking for jobs in HE:
1) The funding situation is quite delicate, and a number of institutions are not recruiting externally, due to this. Additionally, the removal of Capital funding, has led to a number of institutions cutting down on staffing levels.
2) Due to the above, there are many people who are looking for roles within HE who already have experience of working there, and there are likely to be less jobs.
3) Marketing departments are one of the first within HE that are likely to be trimmed. The institution that I work in has halved the department in the last year.
4) When recruiting it is often the case that it's easier to hire someone that has HE experience. Especially in international/overseas recruitment, due to their knowledge of university systems, and pressures such as Tier 4.
My advice would be to keep applying, but try not to be disheartened. Getting interviews means that you are doing well already, you just have to find the right one.0
