Hi all,
I am thinking of setting up a website and wanted some advice on where to start? I know I can buy a domain and start straight away. But I wondered if there is a platform where I can first create the pages and links etc before I send it to go live? Is there such a thing?

Thanks

It depends what platform you intend to create your site in. If its flat files then there are many free or paid for solutions to creating websites that you install on your machine and then just upload the files.

Alternatively if you want to use a CMS then you can get free webhosting environments you can set up on your computer to create an instance of the site there and export it then upload or if you dont fancy messing with that then do it online either in your webhosts sandbox area or another webhost that isnt linked to your domain.

Depends if you want to be able to work on it offline or happy having to be online

I'd start with WordPress. I've used it for 10 years and is the best CMS out there.

    Try WordPress.com

Your web site is not "live" after uploading. It is only "live" when you divulge its address. So you can upload files to your heart's content and nobody but you will know they are there until you divulge.

I'd learn how to use "Dreamweaver" as that's pretty much the industry standard software, followed by "Wordpress", which is server-side script and the current favourite for hacking attempts.

    Thanks for the responses.
I used to use a MS version which was similar to Word. It created the HTML as you inserted text and images and created links to pages. Anyone know what the name of it is?

I would like to work offline and upload it, some sort of a static page.

Frontpage was their old system but that was ended a long time ago.

Ms Expression Web replaced it but that too has now been stopped, though is still available as a free product until next year.
