Painting window sills-advice needed

Our front lounge windowsills are looking scabby with paint cracking and flaking off them. What is the best way to set about painting them, I am not sure if they are concrete or stone.

Do I use paint remover to completely take off the old paint or will sanding be sufficient?
What sort of paint do I use as we live in a wet wind exposed area? Do I use a sealant between the sill and the UPVC window frames?

Any help gratefully received.

i would get as much of the paint off as possible , ideally it would be best to remove it all , if you can't then just get it to a state where the remaining paint is tight , you may want to fill it so the surface is flush with any remaining paint , then i would give the filler a coat of sealer and then paint with bedec multi surface paint ,
seal the edge where it meets the window

Forget paint stripper, it's yet another product that has been dumbed down in the name of saving the planet to the extent that is is largely ineffective.

A good wire brush, hand held or rotary should suffice if it's a stone or conc sill. Personally I's treat with a couple of coats of ordinary undercoat and 3 coats of quality gloss.
Yes, it's imperative you seal the window to the sill, but leave the drain slits clear. (probably 2 25mm wide slots very near the bottom edge, they allow any water that gets past the outer seals to run out and not in)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

What sort of filler do I use to fill a crack which is halfway down the windowsill, do I use one that allows for movement and then do I use a primer on top of the filler before I apply paint?
I have taken pictures of the windowsill but don't know how to get the pictures from my computer into this message.

I have been given conflicting advice on which filler to use-one person says polyfilla flexible gap to seal the crack and another person says flexible window and door frame sealant. Anyone confirm which one to use for this DIY beginner?

One person says this, one says that, which one do you trust most? :)

You could use either, they're similar sort of products. Just make sure whatever you buy is for outdoor use and is going to stick to whatever you want it stick to - read the label.
