Hi, guys I was hoping you could help.
Recently I have been thinking about just how much me and my boyfriend spend on taxi's and buses and it really is loads. I am also thinking about how handy a car would be as we have been struggling to get to places by bus, now we have moved home.
Neither me or my boyfriend drive at the moment but we want my boyfriend, who's 30 to learn to drive as surely it will make life cheaper and easier.
Therefore, I am asking how much does it cost on average to learn to drive?
He has a good idea and had a few lessons when he was younger but money has always been a problem for us, but now we both earn 14k a year so we should be able to afford to run a car shouldnt we.
Then also how much does it cost roughly a month to run a car, not including actually buying a car. Tax, insurance, petrol etc.
We wont be using the car heavilly, just to make life easier visiting family, they all live within half an hour, shopping, and for emergencies etc. We live 2 mins from work so will not need to drive.
I know this prob seems a silly question but I just needed to get a rough estimate to see if we will benefit cost wise.
I know it would make life so much easier, today we had to go to emergency dentist, had a problem then had to get to an hospital a hour away. Ended up waiting for different buses for over 3 hours as they didn't run often grrrr.

hmm
Well I'm 19 and run a 1.2 Grande Punto. I do about 250-300 miles a week which costs about £20-25 of petrol. Road tax is probably about £12 a month. Insurance is the killer (cheaper since you are older) mine is about £90 a month. General maintenance probably averages out to £15-20 a month (tyres, servicing etc).
I'd probably say at a very ruff estimate it costs me about £220 a month.
As for learning it cost me about £600 for about 30 lessons plus test fees.
Hope that helps!0 -

Work on around £40 a week for it to sit there without turning a wheel. Then add the cost of petrol and any parking charges you'll need to pay and also the cost of finance unless you buy outright.
Work on £1000 for lessons and test.
It doesn't make it cheaper. For me to travel 30 miles to work via bus it works out the same as the cost in petrol. I then have to cover all the other expenses. The only reason I don't use the bus is because I start work 2-3hrs before the buses even start running.0
