Can I find out how much benefits a person gets.

my farther passed away recently and I am currently in the middle of sorting out his financial affairs. My dad was mentally not well so my my dad brother was his carer for the last 20 years. My uncle is not being very honest with me about certain things ,one of the things is how much benefits he was getting paid and how it was paid. Can I find this information out from the DWP. I have the powers from the courts to sort out his financial affairs.

You should be able to - you'd need his national insurance number to speed things up but they need telling as you do not want a large overpayment building up.

You can contact the DWP and make sure there hasn't been any overpayment made but aren't all your Dad's benefits clear from his bank/PO statements?

I haven't seen a single bank statement in his name. My farther use to live in another part of the country with my uncle who had the power of attorney to deal with all his affairs.

My uncle over the last few years started distancing himself from me, I guess it was because I was growing up and he knew I will start to ask questions one day. I am not even on talking terms with him now.

I don't even know his national insurance number.

What's the best way of contacting DWP, phone or by letter?

Has your Uncle's Power of Attorney been rescinded? What powers have the courts given you? Are you an Executor of your Father's will?

POA stops on the death of the donor.

Your uncle has had a legal obligation to deal with your father's affairs in an appropriate way.

If you are the sole executor, he should hand over access to everything - he no longer has any right to deal with anything.

If he is also an executor, you will have to work together.

Why do you need to know what benefits he received? Surely all you need to know is how much was left when he died and how much is owed out. Contact the benefits agency where he lived and inform them of his death, they will stop any more payments nod let you know of any overpayment that needs sorting.
