xbox360 free 3year warranty

Options
I bought an xbox 360 and had the dreaded 3red lights (general hardware fault).
My console was out of warranty at the time so i sent it to a console repair centre (not microsoft) which didnt solve the problem.
now after 1.5 years they have admitted great failure rates on xbox360 hardware and have extended the warranty to 3years and giving refunds to anyone who paid microsoft for the repair.:(
What do you think of my chances of having the console repaired now?
just by reading xbox forums i imagine there must be hundreds if not thousands of people who have done this or tried to fix it themselves
after all they have sold 10millions consoles and the failure rate is
said to be 30-40% surely they should have just recalled them.

How nice of microsoft...yeah, this is just due to the large amount of people who refused to accept these consoles as merchantisable quality.
Power to the people, not many take on microsoft and win, but this is really what this web site is about.
Get it repaired, you have a good argument now.
    Good luck!!

It's worth a shot to try and get them to fix it for free but they may try and turn round and say it has been tampered with if you have tried to get it repaired by another company

You can always try the towel trick on your 360 as a last resort to see if it works but it is only a temp fix and not sure how long it brings your 360 back to life for

The big problem microsoft have got is that they don't really know what the problem is. The favoured theory so far is that the failure is due to overheating caused by too many components being packed on to the pcb but that sounds like grasping at staws to me. I don't think there is any proof and until they figure out the exact reason why there has been so many failures they are going to have to keep chucking money away.

TBH Im delighted they're extending warranty. I bought mine in about December so still under warranty but was worried about the future. Now I know I'm covered for yeeeeeeeeers ^-^

I guess the main issue here is that you shouldn't have tried to have it repaired by somebody else. Normally I'd say that you could get it repaired/replaced for free under the Sale of Goods Act from the place you bought it from but Microsoft themselves are under no obligation to do anything after their warranty (which is legally a bonus). Unfortunately in taking it somewhere else to attempt repair before using your consumer rights you may have invalidated them in both ways (MS' warranty and retailer's sale of goods act). First I'd try and appeal to MS and be honest about attempting to have it professionally repaired. If that doesn't work, then your only recourse is through your retailer and the sale of goods act but I'd get advice first from CAB or consumer direct as the repair does put your case on shaky ground depending on how respectable/professional the repairers are.
