Home insurance options so annoying!

Getting home insurance quotes together and coming across some silly things.
1. Choosing the locks makes little or no difference to quote, so might as well choose the worst option. Must be so many people choosing the wrong types and then not being payout in claims.
2. Burgular and smoke alarm make so little difference that you're best off saying you have none. You know if you make a claim and you didn't put the alarm on they won't payout.
3. Asking for job title makes me think that must have some sort of impact, but what? And if some jobs put the price up why not just list them and ask "do you do this job?".

The same form is used for everyone. You seem to not need good locks and alarms.
Locks sometimes depend on location (lots of burglaries means there is a difference) or history (previous burglary makes a difference - you may need top locks to get cover)
Same with alarms - previous history may mean you must have them
And horses for courses when it comes to having (or not having) certain employment0 -
1 & 2 - this depends on a number of factors, if you have low value items and live in a low crime area then these are likely to make little difference. If you have large amounts of art and jewelry or live in a high risk area then these can start making much more difference and in deed may be a requirement for you to have theft cover.
As to job titles, its not simply a list because its not black and white. Its not a case that entertainers and sports people pay 30% more and all other jobs are equal but that a number of roles get a number of different loads/ discounts.
Of cause not all insurers rate the same and so some may not rate on this where as to others it may be a more significant consideration.0 -
I'm just saying if it reduces my £200 quote by £10 to put the best locks, alarms etc. Then there is no point, might as well pay the £10 and put the worst locks, then they can't blame me for stating I had the best locks when I actually didn't.0

When you submit your details for a quote you state you have told the truth.ladyabouttown wrote: »..... then they can't blame me for stating I had the best locks when I actually didn't.
So use dummy details when playing with quotes like this.
(They know when you have made multiple quotes and tried to get the cost down by being less than truthful!)0 -
There can be little or no discount for having approved locks and alarm.
So if I can get a competitive quote without these I would not bother to declare locks / alarm as the policy will normally have endorsements if I said that I have these.
If you are in a postcode area that an insurer considers a higher risk then you may be required to have their minimum security. Likewise if you have had a recent theft claim.
Otherwise just say no to these questions if it's not affecting your premium.0
