Mosquito plug in

Hi all

Going to Greece in a couple of weeks. The mozzies love me, and always go well armed with plug in repellents for the room.

Typically just buy the refills for the Boots liquid repellent plug in units we already have (http://www.boots.com/en/Boots-Repel-Mosquito-Killer-Plug-In-Liquid-Refill-45ml-_1121463/) but they are out of stock and might not come back in stock in time.

Can anyone say for sure whether the jungle formula refills (http://www.boots.com/en/Jungle-Formula-Mosquito-Killer-Refill_12325/) will fit our Boots units.....they do look like they have the same type of fitting...?

Thanks!

I cant answer your question on which refills may fit, but I can recommend these ones.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mosqui-go-Plug-Insect-Repellent-European/dp/B000WZO0EA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1401200328&sr=8-1&keywords=mosquito+repellent+plug+in

We had 3 weeks in mozzie infested jungles & these worked well.

We have a couple of mossie machines purchased in Greece, they both take refills like the Jungle formula ones you linked to. I think these are standard as they fit both of ours.

I 'm sure you would be able to buy a new mossie machine complete with fluid for less £7 or much less for just the refill if you buy it in Greece, every mini market sells the machines and refills.

I have machines from around the world and all mine are the same fitting.
I usually pay about 70-80p for machine and 30day's fluid.

    But not in Boots!

Other things that help against mozzies:

Take Vitamin B Complex every day. Start asap, as it needs at least a week to "kick in".

Take yeast extract tablets, as above.

The combination of the two give you a scent on your skin that the mozzies don't like (but humans can't smell it).

Also, take antihistamines. Start two days before you go and every day you're at destination plus a couple of days after you come back. Buy generic tablets instead of branded stuff, as it's much cheaper. Ask you pr pharmacist for Loratadine. It's non-drowsy.

Avoid perfumes, use lemon or lime scented shower gel. Keep feet very clean as mozzies love feet that are remotely sweaty. If you have aircon in the room, keep it on as much as possible, as the blighters don't like the cold.

Please do check with your GP that the above tablets are suitable for you if you're on any kind of medication.

I speak from experience - mozzies and sand flies love me, and I go to places where these bugs are, on a regular basis. I've previously ended up taking antibiotics due to the amount of bites I've gotten, but after taking the above, I rarely get bitten these days. *Knock on wood*

Mozzies can get into your hotel room through bathroom plug-holes.
A lot of sinks, baths, and showers in hotels don't have plugs.
So before you go on holiday buy a couple of universal sink plugs.
Use them in your room all the time, and you'll cut out an often overlooked point of entry for the little lovies!

Thanks for all the anti-mozzie great advice! (And those of you who confirmed that the refills are compatible :) !)

I've heard of the B vit thing, but never tried. Maybe I will...

I do take antihistamines as standard when on hols- when i do get bit, I react quite badly and these seem to help!

Top tip about the plug hole!

I've also tried the Avon Skin So Soft (I'm surprised no-one mentioned it)- I wouldn't use instead of deet in the evenings, but I find it is ok (and more preferable than deet) for places where you don't want to spray deet (shoulders and the like...)

The antibite (? can't remember what it is called) stick thing is good for treating after you do get a bite too...

Thanks for all the tips Trolleyrun- I feel your pain....I've had bites which have gone septic in the past, hence my total over-caution now. Since that nasty bite, I've been so careful with my regime of plug-ins/ deet spray/ everything else that I only had a single bite in my two weeks in Greece last year....

I can't help about the plug in things as I don't use them but I am a complete mozzie magnet. Best thing to use is deet. In Asia I found mosquito coils to help. I imagine you can buy them on ebay. Not sure how safe they are in enclosed spaces but if you're sitting on a terrace or balcony they're useful. I also stayed in a few places that sprayed my room with mozzie spray on an evening. I've never seen them in Europe but they were huge cans like fly killer and they were strong enough to kill cockroaches too.

As someone else said keep your air con set on a cold temperature. I like to keep my room icy cold. They'll soon go and find a warmer room.

You could also try finding a citronella travel candle. I've bought travel candles in tins before so I imagine it would be possible to buy a citronella one.

Another thing you could try to get from your doc is Fucidin H cream. Works a treat if you get bitten. It's only available on prescription though.
