Repair an electric lawn mower?

Black and decker stripemaster GR 13 inch cut, about 15 years old.
Its arcing when it is first switched on, I suspect that brushes need replacing.
I contacted a local lawn mower repair guy and he said it would need a new motor plus fitting and VAT and it would be cheaper to buy a new one. He said for safety reasons he could not just replace brushes, he had to change the motor.
It sounds a bit far fetched to me. Anyone here have any views?

15 years .. its probably done its job hasn't it ? for £80 ish you can get a new bosch mower or something, or you could source the motor etc yourself but im assuming you don't fancy that approach ? in which case just replace it.If it doesnt pay rent sell it.
Mortgage - £2,000

The labour cost for this would make it uneconomic to repair unless you do it yourself. Brush replacement alone rarely stops arcing, you'd need a new motor. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

I've had my lawnmower serviced in the past when it wasn't running right and i don't think i'd do it again.
It's not just lawnmowers. Washing Machines; TVs; microwaves, pretty much everything is cheaper to renew. It's a throwaway society today.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

I can't believe that you would even consider paying to get a 15 year old mower repaired. You've more than had your value out of it.I can afford anything that I want.
