Inexplicably bad credit rating

Hi

My partner has applied for a credit card with M&S and has been turned down because of bad credit rating. Neither of us can understand why. He's 52, has never had a mortgage, bought a computer recently on 0% finance, has held a credit card with Santander for 20 years which he pays off monthly. He had 2 loans, 1 in 2002 and another in 2005, 1 for £20000, the other he can't remember the amount he borrowed, both of which he paid off early.
He saves monthly.

We're both a bit baffled. Has anyone else had a similar experience? Does anyone have any suggestions as to why this might be?

Thanks for your help.

How does he know this? What exactly did M&S tell him?

That he had been declined because of bad credit rating, i think they contacted Experian. He has taken the letter to phone and find out what's going on so i don't have it to hand.

I've never heard of a company saying bad credit rating as reason for rejection it is normally failed credit score or of there is adverse information they normally highlight this. The loan in 2002 will no longer show on his credit report and it may be what is showing is limited for m&s to accept. Might be worth using the money saving expert checker to see what cards he has best chance for and applying for one of those, see what m&s say and then may be get hold of statuary file from experian and post back if anything is showing as wrong.

    Good luck

    John

Sounds like he may not have credit history, no credit=poor credit report, everything drops off after 6 years, a 20 year old CC won't be reported as it won't be in the T&C's he signed back then. His report will be the same as an 18 year old, with no proof of managing credit.

Are you sure about this ? I have had some of my credit cards for well over twenty years, and they show up on my credit report.

My credit card issuers are continually sending me notifications of changes and updates to their terms and conditions, so I donlt see how the fact that a card was taken out a long time ago is any barrier to it appearing on a credit search.

Yes I'm sure some older cards etc don't get reported OP should check and see what's on there, you must consent to share the data you obviously did.

Money saving expert credit checker just told me I have 80% chance of getting the bad credit score card 30% chance of getting the Santander ones and 0% chance for the others. Never been refused a credit card and just shifted all my debt to the Santander 0% fee 0% interest.
