Staining pine doors

Hi all

Just had new pine doors fitted and was wondering if anyone could advise the best way to go about applying wood stain? The intructions that came with the doors say to use an oil based product so I went out and bought a tub of Sadolin extra durable exterior wood stain in antique pine.

After staining one door it has turned out very blotchy and doesnt look good at all :( When the stain dried I lightly sanded the door and applied a second coat which has improved things slightly.

Is there a better way of doing this to avoid getting a blotchy finish?

I think that the finish is inevitable with pine ad it's not a 'refined' wood? We had them in our last house and used a clear varnish and let them age naturally.

Pine is low grade wood, don't bother staining it just undercoat and put white gloss on it.

If you do decide to paint it now make sure your undercoat is compatible with your [oiled] varnish.
