Hello
First of all I have read this other thread:
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/1267569
We are in the process of completly re-docorating a 1930's house.
It has Lath & Plaster in the Atic for the 1st floor of the house.
I hate the stuff as for the following reasons:
1) It's covered in black soot
2) If you vacuum up the black soot its very easy to hit the side of the wooden laths and this makes the plaster crumble hence making more mess.
3) The roof in my house has no linner and some of the clay tiles are crumbling so this just falls onto the Lath & Plaster creating more mess.
4) Some parts of the Lath & Plaster and very crumbly
The roof tiles and batons will need to be replaced next year.
We plan to install loft insulation but maybe we should wait until roof tiles are linner are replaced next year?
I have read Lath & Plaster makes good sound protection and also a good fire break part from that nothign really
People say it will create alot of mess ...we have already taken the Chimney breast out which made alot of mess do ddon't think that will be an issue.
If the only real issue is mess...and im not currently living in the house then..it has to come down i say.
It looks like the previous owners have already put plaster board over the Lath & Plaster our builder was recomendeding to put another plasterboard over this but it seems like a bodge job.
I don't think i like the idea of big spiders running around it all the dust upstairs either haha

Well I would take a dozen chimney breasts, before tackling a ceiling.
Taking out a chimney is not that messy, you just have to remove the top brick, one at a time.
But a ceiling !! Even if you get above and hoover up as much as possible, at some stage you have smash the ceiling, you cant carefully break it up small bit at a time.
To get an idea, fill a bucket with dust/soot , stick your head in it ......and also a good fire break0 -
When we did our refurb on a Victorian house, I took down the ceilings and it was a lot of mess, but as we were doing everything else at same time, not a problem.
So if you haven't anything in the place, with a clear space to do it, it is worth the mess.

I have done a full refurb on my house in the last 6 months. I wanted a loft conversion too and in order to get a good height on the top floor needed the ceilings lowered.
So all 5 ceilings and joists all came down. Very messy but a skip was filled and it was all brushed and hoovered up and gone within 24 hours. Then vacumed again with a heppa filter and again and again. Then I had new joists put in and new plasterboard. What a great job!
As well as lowering the ceilings a couple of the lathe paster ones had started to bulge and I'm glad I got shut. So much so I've just had all the ones downstairs removed (24 hours) and skipped.Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies0 -
Thanks for your reply guys think we are going to just stick with it so will just plasterboard over and then skim then it will get covered up with loft insulation on the loft.0
