For 10,000 miles per year I'd be sticking with the Merc.
Say you got £10k px, that meand you'd have to pay circa £2k for what ever it is you're looking at.. I'd just put the 2k towards fuel for the merc and enjoy it.0 -

I know what you are saying but I am paying £300 per month on fuel, £285 per year tax, 3 of the tyres are at 4mm or less so I will make back the £2k within a year.
The depreciation on the merc has been basically zero but I plan to keep this car for 5 years or so for a potential £10k saving. My mid life crisis has to be put on hold so that I can retire at 55; got to keep saving.0 -
But the new car could need tyres soon? Plus the fact in 5 years time there could be a whole host of electrical issues with a hybrid.
The VED for your Merc is less than a quid a day.
Used to amaze me the number of people I sold cars to because they were £30 VED for the year.
They didnt realise that to get the £30, they had to pay £5000 for the car..0 -
The 18" 35 profile tyres on the merc cost rather more than the more mainstream tyres on the Prius. Ditto brakes, servicing, roof problems and possible m272 balance shaft issues that could crop up any time oh and cam solenoids but at least they are cheap. In 5 years time the Prius will be as old as the merc is now.0

I suspect there is either 1. a warm glow from being officially 'eco-friendly', and can boast about it at dinner parties, or 2. a good feeling of cheating the taxman, way out of proportion to the money saved.
Do the maths, and it doesn't make sense, but human psychology often isn't all that logical.
I ran a 1971 Series 2 Land Rover for a while, and the glow from sending off a 'cheque' for zero pounds in tax every year far outweighed the cold, rattles, fuel bills and discomfort of running a 40-year-old car.If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.0 -

Love to get the Ampera but it is still over £20k on autotrader.
Thanks for the advice on parking sensors.
If I do buy a car worth say £2k more than the selling price of my current car how much should I expect to pay to change?
Cheapest I can see is £16k0 -
OH has a CT200, the car is great, comfortable, quick enough (and more responsive if in sport mode), the first 12 months were faultless unlike the previous german stuff, the ride on standard wheels (yokos) fsport suspension is good (tyres are very soft doubt they will get to 10k miles for all 4), mpg is carp, we are getting early to mid 40s - nothing like the claimed, its noisy (very) on under hard acceleration, possibly the worst dealers we have ever had the misfortune to deal with (that bad we probably won't consider a Lexus again merely down to the dealer - and its a fairly common theme as the CT is considered a down market Lexus).
The other problem we have is the nearest dealer is 50 odd miles away so its inconvenient.0 -

So if you bought the Prius, you will be in the same situation as you are now.0 -

A friend was looking for a small eco car for around £5000. But it HAD to be either zero or less than £30 VED.
So I found them a last of the old shape KA with leather, air, etc. Oh and £140 VED. But the car was £3400.0 -
In my original post I did say that I was considering a astra 2.0 cdti auto with £175 ved.0
