Unblocking air vent

Greetings all,
I am after some advice. I have two air bricks in the front of my house at just-below-floor level, presumeably to let air circulate under the wooden floor and keep it dry. over the years the vents have got blocked up with soil. I've managed to clear a few by rodding them through with a thin metal pole, but some are just not shifting. Has anyone found anothe way to clear the little vents or soften the soil? it's not really a place I want to introduce water to...
