Help needed for credit card application.

in Credit cards
I am new to this site, so I apologise if I have missed a particular section on here but I could do with some advice and guidance of those in the know.
I am looking to apply for a credit card in order to book a holiday. My husband and I have three children and now because of the law changes with holidays in term time, it will take us a long time to save what is needed to make a booking.
I work part time and have been in my role for just over a year now, so no problems on employment status, however my husband is in the military and we have moved five times in the last five years. As a result, our credit ratings have been hammered. That said, we have now been in our current property for 14 months and it looks like we may have another year at least.
We don't have any other debts, no loans, credit or store cards, no finance on a car, nothing. We have put ourselves on the electoral roll each time we have moved but it seems to have made no difference.
I am registered with credit expert and currently my status is poor. My negative factors at the moment are due to renewing my phone contract (changed over from Orange to EE) and an old Next directory account which I missed payments for due to a move (statements were being sent to an old address despite me changing it).
I have looked at their credit matches but my husband said not to go through them as I may start to get calls from other loan companies.
So really what I am asking is what would be the best credit card to apply for with my personal circumstances?
I don't expect a large credit limit, nor would I want one.
My plan would be to use the card for small purchases and build up the limit.
Thank you in advance.

If you haven't got the money for a lavish holiday this year, don't have one.
Using a credit card to buy something you cannot afford, especially a luxury like a holiday, is not good moneysaving. Chistmas is just round the corner and you'll need money for that too.
Save up hard and have a nice holiday when you can.
Perhaps you could afford a nice day out in the summer in this country this year? Skeggy? Margate?0 -

getting a CC to build up a credit rating makes sense: i.e. using it for regular purchases but to pay in full every month.
getting a CC to pay for a holiday is extremely unwise : save first then spend.
Using the CC for the holiday deposit does provide very useful protection in case of the company getting into financial trouble.0 -
It isn't for a holiday this year, absolutely not.
I would like to book something for summer of next year but it will be used for the deposit only and flights. I will be paying for rest myself.
I'm not looking at booking a luxury holiday, just a seven day holiday in Europe. We don't live beyond our means and never have.
Is the day out to Margate and Skegness a joke?
I think when my husband spends so much time away from his family, we deserve a holiday, not a day out in margate.0 -
How has your credit rating been hammered if you don't have any debt?Hope over Fear. #VoteYes0

How has your credit rating been hammered if you don't have any debt?
I have no idea. I have a "poor" rating. It says my Next account will be held on my records for six years but this was cleared 3 years ago so I have another three to wait.
We're not the only ones in this position. A lot of other military families we know are in the exact same position.0 -

A bit risky booking a holiday so far in advance isn't it? Your husband might not be in a position to accompany you.

He might be able to get you all an overseas posting if you are so keen to travel?
I'd like to know about the best credit cards to apply for, not military living advice.
But to answer your suggestions;
My husbands regiment are no longer deploying, not to mention he is downgraded due to an injury, therefore we are in a position to book a holiday.
Asking for an overseas posting because we are keen to travel.
Really ?0 -
Ask your/his bank (the one that receives your/his income) for a credit card. If they say no, then approach the likes of Vanquis, Aqua, Capital One, Barclays Initial, etc for one of their credit builder cards.0
