Generic question

Just a word of advice if I may.
The title of the thread is 'generic question'. Yet in your opening post you moved away from the generic question and complained that in your case estimated bills led to a bill of £2,000 which was 'unfair' and 'not your fault'.
That was the reason for the responses to your post. Estimated billing is not inherently unfair and you are culpable for not checking estimated meter readings against actual readings and insisting the energy company re-bill you with the correct reading.
You should be aware that the computer algorithm for calculating bills will ignore meter readings given by yourself, or even the official meter reader, if it 'thinks' they must be incorrect. Once there is a large discrepancy between estimated and actual meter readings, the computer will continue to ignore actual meter readings until there is a manual intervention at the call centre. That is why you must insist than a bill based on an inaccurate estimated meter reading is corrected.0 -
There are lots of smart gadgets they can put in these days.
My SatNav is continuously showing the prevailing speed limit on the road I'm driving. Why don't we make it compulsory to use this information to limit your car's top speed, so you never get a speeding ticket?
Even better, all cars should use Bluetooth to switch off your mobile phone when the engine is running, to stop you from being distracted from paying attention to the road.
The consequence is, if you opt out by switching to manual, and have an accident, it counts as your fault, and your insurance will not pay out.
By asking for these things, you add red tape and cost to every day living, and cause grief for everyone.0 -

Great idea!
Stops my passenger using the phone and yelling - 'Say that again, I only caught a couple of words - you keep breaking up.'0
