French hypermarket trollies

To release a shopping trolley at a French hypermarket, you will need a 2 Euro coin. You get it back when you return the trolley.
However, if you don't have a 2 Euro coin, use a UK 2p coin. Since you get it back anyway, you are not cheating.
I was shown this by a French female shopper in Calais, who proudly showed me her English 2p coin!
Regards,
Felix

It probably depends on which hypermarket. It certainly used to be 1 Euro, when a old 10 Franc coin worked as well.cheekymole wrote: »Have they recently changed then as I always use a 1 Euro coin?0 -
Having lived in France for 13 years I have never found a 2€ trolley, the simplest way is to ask in any supermarket or DIY store for a "jetton", a free plastic or metal disc which fits the trolley.0

Next time you are in Calais, go to Carrefour, Avenue Georges Guynemer with a 2 Euro or 2p coin or a "jetton".
Because this hyper is relatively unknown to the Brits, it makes for a much nicer shopping experience.

Vive le France! It could only happen over there. The French come up with a cunning scheme to ensure no-one nicks or leaves the chariot in an unauthorised space in the car park. However, I have never quite seen the logic of giving away those tokens that have no intrinsic value and then, if wanted, can just be left in the said chariot and left just about anywhere.
I did get "upset" recently when I lost my limited edition Carrefour token when I gave my chariot over to someone who was having difficulty in getting one out of the chariot park. Only found it was limited edition when I went to the help desk to get a replacement - sad?0 -
Thanks for that tip - I have some plastic carrefour tokens, but they are 10 francs size - so no good anymore.
I have also found that euro 10c coin works in leisure centre lockers instead of £1 coin!0
