Shubbery ?!

I've just dug out a patch of the garden to plant some things to try and brighten up the place.

I'm not much of a gardener, first house ! so want something with minimal maintenance (don't we all). I was thinking of evergreen shrubs/ bushes that flower up in the summer but stay nice and leafy during the rest of the year. Nothing that grows too big tho !

So far I've dug down churned up the muck, got rid of about half of it and replaced that with compost that I've mixed in. See pic ! I was going to put the black weed blocker on top of the soil and put down plum slate or something similar.

Any other tips before I go to the garden centre, shubberies aren't cheap, I don't want them to die on me ! What good plants should I get, anything else I need to do to the soil, plum slate and weed blocker bad idea ?

Thanks :o
Mark

That looks like heavy clay soil? How much sun does that bed get?

All shrubs can look like municipal roundabout . I'd add some ground cover like the easy to grow alchemilla mollis and ajuga.

It would get the sun all day long.

I'm not sure what soil it is, it didn't seem too thick or heavy when I was digging at it. The dark stuff is compost I've added into it.

The ajugas look nice. More research it seems !

We've just done part of the back garden in plum slate, 3 20 kg bags of 20mm pieces for £10 at B&M or 4 20kg bags of 40mm pieces for £15 at The Range if that helps.
