Sickness benefit?

Friend has been signed off work by her GP.

Her company doesn't pay anything at all while an employee is off sick.

She's hoping to be back at work as soon as possible but is there anything she can claim to help with the salary-free sickness period?

She's been off a week now and it looks like going into at least another week if not longer.

She has no savings at all.

An employer can't pick and choose whether to pay statutory sick pay, they can only choose whether or not to pay contractual sick pay.

Is she entitled to SSP? - https://www.gov.uk/statutory-sick-pay/eligibility

If not her employer will need to provide an SSP1 and she could discuss with JCP about ESA.

Thanks blondebubbles. She works 30 hours a week - but is on a zero hours contract! - so looks like she does qualify for SSP.

Is it actually the employer who will pay this? If so, will she get it in her next monthly wage?
