Does anyone know if this applies to Sainsburys when you do your grocery shop on-line?? thanks

The current BM does not, so I doubt it.

    Just play along with them.
10 different items could be 1 banana, 1 mushroom, 1 tomato, 1 carrot, etc, etc, etc.

Best not to try that in a Local, though, lest their mushrooms or carrots are priced with the same mark-up as individual bananas.

I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

This looks simply like a way to try to minimise the cost impact of brand match on Sainsbury's, still possible to use in a cost effective manner, but far more complicated and annoying than before. For small shops then anyone not paying attention being required to purchase ten or more items greatly increases the chances that any gains on one branded product are cancelled out by losses on another.
For those paying attention previously it was quite easy to buy an expensive item, for instance a bottle of spirits marked at £20 or above, but perhaps £15 in Asda, get a five pound token, and use that on a mixture of own brand and cheaper than other supermarket branded goods with the simple placement of a next customer sign between the two shops. Clearly now that will not be possible, and the closest thing possible, will require annoyingly fiddly shops picking up a lot of little things. At least this will clutter up their tills more.

For people doing one large shop without paying attention it should have no net effect, one assumes these are the people Sainsbury's wants, and the fact that every now and again they'll be a pound or two better off under either system is supposed to keep them happy.

The whole thing is obviously a game, as with all these things, and if you're losing you try to change the rules.
