Newbie after advice re PPI

Hi Im completely new to this forum although I do read many posts. Im wondering if anyone can help me. I had a call the other day from a CMC offering to look into PPI claims for me. I have never considered it before as although I have had alot of credit in the past (loans, credit cards, mortgages) I never thought that I had ever taken PPI out. However after talking to the CMC I started to list all of my past credit agreements (from memory, I have very little paperwork) and of all of them I did wonder whether I had anything with any of my first loans with HSBC, so purely out of curiousity I rang them up to find out and low and behold e customer services advisor told me that she could see a a PPI policy I had had with them. I have no recollection of this and unfortunately the lady couldnt tell me which product it had been linked to but she did give me the loan account number of my two loans I had had with them and my first mortgage.
My question is what should my next step be? Should I write to them querying the PPI account or should I write querying the loan accounts ? If so which template should I use, the one on here for closed accounts or the long SAR one. I had no knowledge of this insurance and have no details either other than the account number but I want to make sure I go about this the right way.
