Order to paint a room

Right I need to decorate some bedrooms and a hallway.

They are bare plaster. So I know that I need to prep and give a mist coat to the walls. Before final coats.

Now most things I look at on-line say paint in this order

1) ceiling
2)walls
3)woodwork

I personally think it should be

1) ceiling
2)woodwork
3) walls

My reasoning behind that is that is easier to wipe off emulsion from the gloss work then than the other way around. I am doing this work myself so my cutting skills are next to nil :rotfl:

Also I can use masking tape on the gloss which won't pull off the paint like emulsion. Yep made that mistake already :(

Anyone does it really make any difference.

Yours

Calley

Caulk first, leave for 24 hours, ceilings, walls, woodwork.

Gloss, especially oil based, takes at least three days and as long as a week to dry completely. Most people don't want to wait that long between doing stages of the job.

Get emulsion on wet gloss and you will be wishing you had done it the other way because you will be glossing again!

Use low tack tape, not car spares shop masking tape and it won't pull emulsion off.

For cutting in, especially corners between ceiling and walls, use artists brushes.

I am glad I am not the only one who uses artists brushes for the very edges of walls, my partner thinks i am too OCD :).

I have just painted my whole house and the order i did was:

    polyfilla/sanding/sealing/masking
    ceiling
    gloss skirts, sills and doors,
    coving
walls with a roller to close to the edge, paintbrush to get a bit closer and then artists brush for the very edges top and bottom.

I have painted a house on an ongoing basis since i moved in 6 months ago so letting the gloss dry wasn't an issue.

Should have said, I don't gloss. Use satinwood or something similar. Dries quicker too so easier to wash off emulsion splashes. But always leave 24 hours between too cos I'm too old n knacked to do them all in one day now lol. When I used to do it in one day, I did the ceilings first.

I moved last month, got 2 rooms done, then took ill. Took 2 weeks to get back on my feet. Hallway's getting started tomorrow and will probably take about 5 days to do altogether. Purely cos I'm so knackered. Unless I make a lot of noise and hope that the DS will hear me moan or the fella will take pity on me and come round and do it. Hoping though :)
