Switching student loan repayments to direct debit

I think I'm around 18 months from repaying my student loan - I've heard horror stories of HMRC and the SLC bungling things up at the end of the loan resulting in people ending up paying for longer than they need to, and waiting a long time to receive a repayment.
I've heard that I can switch my repayments to direct debit, but how exactly does this work? I can see how setting up the direct debit should be easy, but how does SLC communicate with HMRC for them to stop taking the payments via PAYE?
Does anybody have recent experiences of this, and did things go smoothly for you?
