Epson printer - not recognising cartridges

My Epson printer (SX405) has worked fine on refilled cartridges up until yesterday - I had previously replaced all 4 and had printed several pages - then yesterday, I got a "Cannot recognise MAGENTA" - Which I have changed yet again - with the same result
I changed it using the utility on Windows rather than the printer
What is going on here ?

I had this recently (warned my cyan was getting a bit low and it refused to recognise all the other cartridges)

Replaced the cyan but still refused to play ball, so replaced the other two colours and it was ok. (they were less than quarter full, the black was replaced about a week ago)

The re-fills I got had a note that in case of non recognition, remove/ replace the cart until it does recognise it. Also read an article that if the problem persists, remove all carts, let it complain, switch off printer, remove mains plug, have a cuppa, reconnect to mains, switch on, let it complain again, insert all the cartridges, this should fix it - apparently . . .
