New Wireless Access Point woes (can't keep snot-free net)

I had a set up system of wifi Router which is wired directly into my desktop. I use wifi to connect other things to it, tablet, laptop, phone etc. Cue an ancient flat built to withstand a nuclear detonation with the thickness of the walls etc so wifi only serves the living room. I then had a Wireless Access Point wired in 10m away to provide wifi to the rest of the flat. The old ancient one died, and I bought another one, however I'm struggling to set it up to give me wifi that isn't like snot. I get pages waiting for, disconnects from games, lagging, and drop outs on it. It is not the internet connection. It's currently sat in living room so I can switch between the Router wifi and Access point wifi and see instant difference. The router wifi is stable and perfect, the access point is not. (I have tried different channels on the access point as well)
The original access point broadcast as a separate wifi network, not an extension of the router wifi, which worked fine, and I'm happy to do that with again, if this new one would be stable wifi wise.
Router has been replaced as well, so brand new fresh out the box, the netgear access point has been "set up" as much as I can see to do so, wifi security turned on, and new wifi name and the region set to UK.
I am at a loss, and google isn't providing much help to me. The paper copy of the quickie install guide I have followed to a T, no go. The CD version of the quickie install guide has an extra step in it
Where do I get the IP settings from? All the computers I use are set to get an IP address automatically under IPV 4 adaptor settings, and I'm not sure if I'm meant to pick that up from the Router itself?
Router is Technicolour preconfiged Plus net router, model number: TG582n
Wireless Access Point is Netgear WN604
It was doing the same with previous router. I guess the first access point I used was configured somewhat years ago when it was first bought, but I was unable to view the settings before it karked it
I have tried the netgear support line, but it's an Indian Call Centre who are following a script and are not understanding me/me not being able to understand them.
My next step is to cry, moan a bit in a corner, and then buy an extra long 10m RJ11 adsl cable to physically move the router into the middle of the flat to at least get wifi access in other rooms, and say "stuff you access point", and just hard wire the desktop into it. BUT this means no wifi in living room.
I am seriously frustrated with this thing. Been trying to get the wifi element working properly for 2 weeks almost.

This is all I can think of what I haven't tried. But I'm in deep water here, no clue!e. Finally, select Basic Settings under the Setup menu on the left navigation pane
and configure the IP Settings for your network.

It's back to it's factory settings now. DCHP got enabled, and it was still snotting/lagging on the wifi connection. However we couldn't access the point either through wired connection, so had to factory reset.

I think these are what I'm meant to change, but I'm not sure to what though, and where I am meant to get these from.0 -
Thanks! I tried that, and it comes up withGateway IP should be matching Management Network!!0
