Landlord boiler repair issue

    I don't think most 2 year olds would be too concerned about not washing for a couple of days! I agree with the others - your agent/ landlord are being very prompt in organising a repair.

    Thank you all for taking the time to read through my post and reply. Even though most of you will get annoyed again! I have the following to say:
    - if the issue was dealt with straight away, knowing it's a boiler and the weekend is approaching it would have been fixed now
    - I did phoned the manufacturer's helpline (same one are coming on Monday) and was told that if they have received the call earlier than 4.30pm an appointment for today would have been scheduled. As the next 'working' day for the company is Monday this is when the engineers will visit to try and fix the boiler
    - I don't think I have to be grateful to my managing agent for acting in timely manner (if that's could be referred to one), as this is what they are paid for, after all with the rent we're paying I will obviously seek everything dealt with straight away.
    - if you haven't faced such a problem fyi there are reputable companies out there working 24/7, so you can have your boiler fixed within 2 hours, at the cost of £220 (that includes call out charge, 2 hours of labour and up to £150 in parts
    - anyone tried to boil about 20 kettles, so you can wash yourself and rest of the family. Let me tell you one thing: it's time consuming, the kettle gets over heated and you will need to wait to cool off , etc.
    Again, thank you for reading through my post. All I needed to know is whether I could fix the boiler myself and not get in breach with the tenancy agreement I have with the landlord, as he is obviously trying to save £200 for the cost of repairing the boiler, but why do I need to go through all that inconvenience when I'm expected to pay my rent in full every month? Or most of you tenants out there care about the landlord's bills?

    I agree. I give up. There's just no helping some people.

    I don't know what the OP expects us to say, or what she expects the agent and landlord to do. They have done all they can, and have 100s of other tenants to deal with. Nobody would have gotten the repairmen out quicker. NOBODY.

    To get someone out within 2 working days AND for them to get someone to come out on a bank holiday is perfectly fine and acceptable. Some people are just very spoilt and demanding I think. The OP is coming across as extremely precious.

    Seriously OP, if you were to try and take this further, you would be laughed at. You have no problem or issue whatsoever. Just wait til Monday. As I said, many people (including myself) have had babies/toddlers and had no heating or hot water, (and for longer than 3 days!) but you just deal with it. If you were a homeowner, you'd be lucky to get it fixed this month!
    Proud to have lost over 3 stone (45 pounds,) in the past year! :j Now a size 14!

    How many people? 1 or 2 kettle fulls each should be plenty for a strip wash. I guess I might use 3 if I needed to wash my hair - it is very long though. Or I'd use a can of dry shampoo for a few days, which might be easier? Or wash in cold water.

    It sounds like it maybe could have been organised a shade sooner, but the length of time is no where near unreasonable. A boiler breakdown in summer may not be the agents' first priority - in winter it'd be different.

    Also, bear in mind how you're coming across to the agent - you only gave them a few hours to try and sort something before hassling them. You need to give them a chance. Things take time.

    Problem is people are busy and just because your problem is the most important one in your mind maybe the agent had more pressing issues to deal with. perhaps they were down on staff if people had booked a day's holiday to extend the weekend. I think that the offer of a fix on Monday is acceptable, we had a problem with a gas explosion taking out the gas and electricity supplies in the whole area on the 22nd of December a few years ago. My sister had a three month old baby and no heating or hot water and not even any electricity to boil a kettle. It's inconvenient but it's not the end of the world people live with things like this all the time.

    Classic example of the "me me me" attitude that is so prevalent these days.
    You want to know hardship? Try going to a third world country.
    If it was winter people would have sympathy for you but it's not. Get over it.

    Most of us have had to wash without a working boiler for much more than 3 days. You don't just use the kettle but put pans of water on the hob too, with a jug of clean warm water to rinse your hair. Lots if people have had a small baby with no heating in winter or no electricity or water at all for a period if time. Your 2 year old will be fine.

    The process if arranging a repair yourself and deducting it from the rent involves essential repairs only and you must request the repairs by post plus follow up with quotes by post with no action by the landlord before you can then get the work done. Shelter has a guide on their website.
