So Jim - Why didn't their CS point out that it was stated on the dealing screen?

And if I missed it, where it could/would be confirmed?

Or if they weren't sure, why didn't THEY run (me or themselves) through the dealing screen, see it said zero initial charge and confirm that as the case?

And why confirm 5.25 even in the light that I was telling them the KIIP was generic and said 'upto'.

And the dealing screen, no matter what it says is the initial charge insists you tick to say you read the KIIP - which implies it could be something different - hence confusion?

And after the dealing page disappeared I couldn't find a record that confirmed the zero initial charge - so rather than risk losing £700+ and the fallout from that, I called CS... and wasn't inspired.

I'm new to their foibles, but been looong in online share & fund dealing, being/been on 3/4 other platforms.

My plan was to rationalise to Iweb, once I know my way around.
I recognise these are teething problems, but my point is I can understand why HappyBirthday maybe isn't clear.

If you want good service pay up for Hargreaves Lansdown. I've been tempted by iWeb but now soulsaver has got me hesitating.

I think more discussion like this will 'out' their foibles - it hasn't put me off going there - but I was worried that I'd made a decision to rationalise with them on the basis of cost... but the first dealing charges would have cost me more than I was paying elsewhere in a year if their CS initial reply was correct.

Anyway I placed the trade today and I've now got enough names & contemporaneous note ammo that if it (charges) isn't what I expect I can argue strongly enough to get it rectified.

Which fund was it? I must admit, I thought initial charges were a thing of the past with discount platforms...

Sorry to repeat myself, but: so there wasn't a 5.25% charge? Or there was?

Maybe they asked you a direct question and instead of giving a simple answer you instead waffled on and on... :rotfl: If the system is telling you the initial charge is 0, then that is what the system will charge you. Try going to the confirmation screen on a few different funds to see how it works.

A good MSE tip, though: prt-scrn every confirmation page before submitting, and store it as a .jpg. This advice isn't just for shares and funds, but every online transaction. I often read cases online (like yours) where they are useful.

Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.
