If you fancy a long walk (approx 9 miles) with stunning views, the Vale of Ewyas Horseshoe starts from Capel-y-ffin, about 30 miles north of Monmouth.
If you like country houses and gardens, Westbury Court (20 miles to east) is a splendid example of a late-seventeenth-century formal Dutch-style garden.
The AA Mini Guide to Wales says Monmouth is "a good base for an exploration of the picturesque Wye Valley and its lovely riverside walks"; recommends a visit to Tintern Abbey; and for food, the Bell Inn at Skenfrith gets a good write-up.
Hope this helps.
Ooh Jelly you mentioning swimming just reminded me of the other thing I was going to recommend: hiring a kayak/canoe around Ross and then canoeing down the river, it's great fun! Hopefully your other half is more patient than mine though, he kept saying I was slacking on the paddling and that's why we kept heading into the trees along the riverside :rotfl:

Arguably the best medieval church in the country, with a remarkable collection of 12th-century carvings.purpledonkey wrote: »I also second this church.Emily_Rachel wrote: »Thanks for this. It makes the trip even better if we have some unusual local things to look out for. I certainly would never have thought of this church, but am now a little intrigued!
Kilpeck Church is well worth a visit. The carvings are stunning - a lot of them about everyday life or pagan/Celtic themes rather than Christian iconography .... there's musicians and dancers and a man wrestling a pig, dogs and rabbits and birds, lion-headed humans, and more dragons than you'd know what to do with.
There's a free handout at the church which lists them, also an excellent guidebook which goes into more detail, and there's usually a church volunteer who can explain what's what, too.
Most of the carvings are round the top of the exterior wall, so binoculars are helpful to see them up close.
See if you can spot the rude one, too. You'll know it when you see it:o Well, it's not really rude - it's positively pornographic:eek:'It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.'
