Whoohoo! We have just booked a little cottage for two for a few nights away near Monmouth next week. Really looking forward to visting castles and Hay on Wye, but does anyone have any other local recommendations for things to do, special shops to look out for, local delicacies, nice restaurants and pubs? We are taking the car, and don't mind a little drive. I have heard about wild swimming in the Wye at a few places..any particularly good? Any suggestions welcome! Thanks!

Ah, my childhood homeland :) Whereabouts are you actually staying if you don't mind my asking? Some places are a lot easier/harder to get to, depending on whereabouts you'll be. Hay is lovely, hopefully you like second-hand books!
I also second this church. Unusual places I can recommend are Puzzlewood Forest, Chepstow Castle, Raglan Castle and the stunning Symonds Yat (off of a dodgy steep single track, 2 way road, but worth it!). If you like caves, Clearwell caves are about 2 minutes away from Puzzlewood. Regarding shops, Monmouth is your best bet. If you feel the itch for a glitch, Chepstow has a decent Ts :rotfl: Hope that helps.

Have fun! Good morning all :)

I'd definitely recommend Symonds Yat, if you're at the top you can see peregrine falcons nesting in the cliffs, there's usually an RSPB bloke there with binoculars if you're interested, and you can walk alongside the river, cross over a bridge after a couple of miles, walk back and then pay about a quid to sit in a boat and get towed across the river towards a very nice pub called the Saracen's Head :)

I'd also add Tintern Abbey to the 'to do' list, it's really old and full of history, and there also happens to be a nice pub opposite (can you sense the theme here? :D)

I had to smile at the T's comment though PD, I have never heard any of the shops in the 'stow being referred to as 'decent' before :rotfl:

Got a book on wild swimming, somewhere(!), will try and find it and report back.
Found the book, but it's 'Wild Swimming - Hidden Beaches' so nothing inland; nearest featured beach is Merthyr Mawr Warren … probably too far away.

If you fancy a long walk (approx 9 miles) with stunning views, the Vale of Ewyas Horseshoe starts from Capel-y-ffin, about 30 miles north of Monmouth.

If you like country houses and gardens, Westbury Court (20 miles to east) is a splendid example of a late-seventeenth-century formal Dutch-style garden.

The AA Mini Guide to Wales says Monmouth is "a good base for an exploration of the picturesque Wye Valley and its lovely riverside walks"; recommends a visit to Tintern Abbey; and for food, the Bell Inn at Skenfrith gets a good write-up.

    Hope this helps.

I think there's a new mag (DD was waving what I think was the new one at me yesterday)
If it is I think it has a moc in it for 3 health lottery tickets for £2 :j
We normally do the odd lucky dip on the lottery so for the same price I'm thinking we might as well give this a go instead :j

Edit: found it, yes there's a new mag for June :D
Do you have a link for it
