    For EmmaP

We spent a week in Iceland and it was (with the exception of our honeymoon in Sark over 30 years ago) the best holiday we've ever had. :j :j

It's an amazing country full of outstanding natural beauty and lovely people. Here are a few random tips based on our experience:

As someone has already posted - alcohol is incredibly expensive so, if you really want to drink while you're there, buy all the alcohol you can in Reykjavik airport when you land (while it's still duty free). Failing that, buy alcohol in supermarkets.

Most of the top tourist places have adjacent cafes for their captives! However, these are expensive as most tourist places are miles from any other shops so, once you're there, there is nowhere else to buy food/drink. Best thing is to buy picnic stuff from an Icelandic supermarket (or even in the UK airport once you are through check-in) and take it with you. If you have room in your suitcase, pack a metal thermos flask so you can make a warm drink to take with you.

Our hotel (Hotel Holt, which was absolutely fabulous) gave us free tickets to some museums and the Hallgr!mskirkja (go up in a lift to the top for an amazing view over the city) as well as the local swimming pools so it might be worth asking at your hotel reception if they have any free tickets for these things too.

We ate in the Cafe Loki twice and the traditional Icelandic food was delicious (I particularly recommend the mashed fish and rye bread ice cream) and prices were very reasonable for Iceland: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Restaurant_Review-g189970-d1960952-Reviews-Cafe_Loki-Reykjavik_Capital_Region.html

If you have tickets for a Northern Lights tour then go on the trip the first night you are there if you can as most tour companies give free trips on subsequent nights if you don't see the Northern Lights first time.

We enjoyed going to the indoor weekend flea market and my dh bought me some beautiful silver earrings there for less than we would jave paid in the UK. It's very variable, (like car boot sales here) with loads of stalls, some selling tat, while others have some interesting stuff. Food is cheap (for Iceland) and you can buy 2nd hand icelandic wool jumpers etc. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g189970-d547370-Reviews-Weekend_market-Reykjavik_Capital_Region.html

We did did several trips (Golden Triangle, snowmobiling and Southern Coast) and, although they were all fantastic we thought the Southern Coast was the most beautiful and varied.

Finally, pack good thermal underwear (we had M&S which proved brilliant), hats, gloves, warm, waterproof coat (with hood) and sturdy boots with good grips. Don't even think about leaving buying clothes or shoes until you get to Iceland as, when we went, these were about 3 times the price of anything in the UK!

Have a wonderful time - I'd go again in a heartbeat if I could.

    Thanks Nenen :D

Even more excited now. So far I've got my super huge wind cheater waterproof coat and not much else (unless my warm gloves and boots arrive from the recent glitch ;) ). Thermals are definitely on the list so I'll look out for good deals.

That's great to know about the price of booze. I imagine it's much the same as Sweden in that respect. Very good idea about duty free at the airport. I'll remember that :A
    Debt free 6th December 2014 :)

  • Courtesy of HUKD - decent price but more so for what it is. I've been looking at these over the past couple of months & the things you can do with it are amazing phones, robots & way too much to go into. Great for adults/teens with imagination & easy to build projects.
