Advice re changing credit card

This is probably a silly question, but I'm looking to apply for a Halifax Clarity card ahead of a holiday in November but I've already got a Halifax card. Can I pay off and cancel this card (its only got a small amount on it) and then apply for the Clarity card?

Yes you can, but leave 2-3 months between closing the old one and applying for the new one.

I agree with supersaver - best to ask whether they can change the card for you - otherwise IMO there is a good chance they will not accept your application as you will be an existing customer.

Will do, thanks for the advice.

I just tried this, about to close one Halifax credit card account and asked if it could be transferred to a Clarity account. Customer services advised that they don't transfer accounts in this way and I would need to close old account and wait at least 30 days before applying for another.

Strange - I went into a Halifax branch earlier this year to advise them I was going abroad - they advised me in branch to phone their card services to get the card changed. I didn't try it as I didn't think the new card would arrive in time.

Just to update I rang card services this morning, they advised that they can't transfer accounts, but I could close down the card I have now and reapply in 6 months, though this is just about too late for me unfortunately.

My wife is a second card holder on my Halifax card, so can apply for one now though, so hopefully problem solved.
