NHS Job Discrimation

Hello,

My friend has pointed out something on a job application for the NHS. There is a particular requirement for the job a knowledge of a process of which the experience would only of been obtained from working in the organisation.

Its open to external candidates but is there any point? Is there not a bias to external candidates seems really unfair to me.

Its not something that you couldn't be taught.

Many external candidates will have previous NHS experience, either having worked at the Trust before or elsewhere in the NHS. The requirement is not discriminatory, it just favours people with previous experience.

There could be people that used to work for the NHS. Could be people in completely different locations within the NHS. Could be people who have contracted for the NHS.

Or they might already have an internal candidate in mind but they're still going through the whole process to tick some boxes and stop people whining over "unfair" decisions.

Either way, it doesn't matter. It's not discrimination and it's not unfair to want people to have the skills that they'll need in their job.

NHS is a health rpovider, not an employment and training scheme.

Its a very specific process that they need to have knowledge of. You couldn't of worked in an department outside of that.

That dept is likely to exist in every Trust of that type (primary/ acute etc), most will use the same processes.

I fall to see the point in your post.

What's wrong with them wanting to hire someone who knows the job and can walk in and do it on day 1? They're spending public money and should spend it as wisely as possible - hiring someone who has experience and doesn't need a lot of training is much more cost-effective than hiring someone who isn't experienced.

The word 'discrimination' gets bandied about a lot by people who don't seem to understand what it means. Every choice involves discrimination (defined as recognising and understanding the difference between things) - but the vast majority of discrimination is not illegal discrimination.

My point was what is the point of them externally advertising the job?

Why dont they just make it internal only or put on the advert you must of worked in the NHS?

Instead they are going to have tons of people apply who have done things similar but not that exact process. Therefore have 100's of applications that they have to sift through.

Your point has already been answered - a good number of people outside that Trust may well have the relevant experience.

As above. Also, if they don't get an applicant who ticks all the boxes then they might consider an applicant who ticks most but not all.
