I'm afraid that's your problem. When you buy mail order (especially, in my experience, from the big companies) you have no idea what you are going to get.

Frankly, as long as you get them when they are freshly delivered, I would far prefer to buy from supermarkets and the like for not a great deal more.

For future reference, the same applies to plug plants earlier in the season. I've taken to buying the few I want (those I don't propagate myself) from what used to be called Wyevale - which sells plug plants early in the year. They may cost a little more but at least you can pick and choose for quality.

On the whole I have not had much success with mail order bedding plants/plugs, using various well known suppliers. Like A. Badger I prefer to pay a bit more for more established plants from a variety of garden centres or supermarkets in the area. I have had some very healthy plants from Aldi but you have to be there early on the day they are on offer. They sell like hot cakes around here.

Ive bought 4 lots of large plug plants from Ebay this year, all excellent quality and now growing happily in my border.
