    £15000 a year is £1096 a month take home.

For that, even if we're being quite extravagant...

    £450 Rent
    £120 Council Tax
    £75 Electricity
    £75 Gas
    £15 TV License
    £100 Food Shopping
    £20 Landline and Broadband
    £30 Mobile Phone
    £15 Contents Insurance
    £20 Car Tax
    £40 Car Insurance
    £20 Car Service and MOT
    £40 Water Bills
    £75 Petrol

All the above fits into the £1096 takehome, and I'm sure the OP could cut the figures above with a bit of MoneySaving for some fun-money ;)

'I work in forestry' - these are the aspects of forestry that need qualifications - you said none was needed. If his degree is in a relevant subject and he can discover some ambition he could do better over time.

No I didn't. Are you drunk?

A lot of those things depend on your lifestyle though. Mine are fairly different for ~£17k income:

    £700 rent
    £12 TV licence
    £19 Sky
    £30 phone & broadband
    £30 electricity
    £22 gas
    £10 water
    £6 contents insurance
    £9 MOT/service
    £25 petrol
    £7.50 mobile
    £180 shopping/lunches/take-aways
    £16.25 sports membership

    Remainder: £350/month.

Having a free commute (cycling) and extra income from interest (£1.5k last year) helps too.

Yes, at the moment I'm on £14,888.72 NET (and the salary is the highest it's ever been), minus the train pass it's £13,556.72 a year.

-I don't own a car, only a motorbike which is used sparingly.
-I tend to go on the pushbike (a bit like going to the gym, but you're actually going from A to B for very little) .
    -I don't have a TV Licence, or a sky/TV subscription.
-Most of my food has a yellow sticker on, (you really can't be fussy).
-Credit cards are STRICTLY for cashback and 0% stoozing.
-Clowncil tax is band A with 25% discount.
-Only debt which interest is paid is a mortgage, and that gets overpaid to the max.
-I don't buy crap, especially on credit. (very important).

So if you're careful and use restraint, then it is perfectly resonable for a single person to live on £15k/year. And yes I do go out sometimes and generally "have a life".:p
