Parking tickets are like buses...

Second ticket this week, completely different circumstances.
This one was issued by Manchester City Council. I was out in the city last night, and parked within a designated spot at 19:09. I paid and displayed taking me through to 8:09 this morning, but stupidly put the ticket upside down on my dashboard.
I came back a little after 10pm to find a parking ticket issued by the council.
On it, it states the contravention is "parked after the expiry of paid for time".
Three questions:
1) Is the contravention accurate? Surely it should be "failed to display a valid parking ticket" or similar? The wording implies that they acknowledge I paid for some amount of parking, which they could not know as my ticket was upside down.
2) As it's council issues I assume my approach is different. Should a friendly call to the council explaining the situation followed up with sending them a copy of my parking ticket be enough to resolve this?
3) There is a printed code on the bottom rear of the parking ticket that matches a code on the front. Is this unique to my ticket? They'll have a photograph of the rear I assume, so sending them the front should confirm I did in fact pay?
And yes I know, I wont be so stupid next time.

Three questions:
1) Is the contravention accurate? NOPE Surely it should be "failed to display a valid parking ticket" or similar? YEP!
2) As it's council issues I assume my approach is different. Should a friendly call to the council explaining the situation followed up with sending them a copy of my parking ticket be enough to resolve this? NOPE, NO PHONE CALLS. THE PCN TELLS YOU HOW TO APPEAL AND IT IS NOT BY TELEPHONE.
3) There is a printed code on the bottom rear of the parking ticket that matches a code on the front. Is this unique to my ticket? They'll have a photograph of the rear I assume, so sending them the front should confirm I did in fact pay? SEND THEM A COPY OF THE FRONT!
Answers above in red. And get Bogsy's specific wording on fluttering tickets from pepipoo like this poster did:

Bogsy's wording will nail it.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
