Moving house

I am moving to a new house which I am renting, and am currently on gas and electric pay as you go meters, the new landlord has no problem with me getting pay as you go meters put in but has told me only the electric one can be changed.

He says that although they are both with eon, the gas meter is supplied by an independent person, so eon cant change that meter.

I'm confused, surely if its eon that hes with there shouldn't be a problem?:(

    Hi eeyore9

Sounds like the gas is shipped to the new house by an Independent Gas Transporter (IGT).

These are smaller gas network operators that deliver the gas to homes and businesses. They'll own and operate the gas pipes that take the gas to the house.

Not all IGTs supply prepayment meters.

You can check if the gas supplier is an IGT by looking at the Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN). If it's 8 digits long and begins 74, 75, 76 or 77 then the gas provider will be an IGT.

If you ask the landlord, the MPRN will be on previous bills.

No problem with the electric, though. If you contact our prepayment guys, they'll arrange for the meter to be fitted. There's no charge for this.

Just a quick heads up. If you let us know the date and meter readings when you take over responsibility, we can make sure your account is set up accurately. You can either call in or do this online through our website.

Hope this explains eeyore9 and good luck with the move.

Sorry eeyore9 but if the gas is shipped by an IGT and they don't support prepayment meters, the existing credit meter will have to stay in.

Is the debt at the old house with us? If it is, it can be put on to the electric meter provided you agree to this.

Our prepayment guys will be able to set this up when they're arranging for the electric meter to be changed.

    Hope this helps.

yes I am still in the old house and have a gas and electric meter. So I can ask eon to put the gas debt onto the electric one yes? And this has to be done before I move to the new address? And then they will transfer it over to the new electric meter??

    Hi eeyore9

You need to have taken over responsibility for the new house and have an account there in your name first.

At this point, you'll need to talk to us to arrange for the electric meter to be changed to prepayment.

Assuming the debt is with us, ask the advisor to transfer the debt from your old house to this new account.

Once the prepayment electricity meter has been installed, we can arrange for a message to be sent to the meter to add the debt.

Hope this helps eeyore9. Let me know if you need any more advice as happy to help.
