2 windows - £2700?!

We have just had a quote done to get two uPVC windows replaced in our house (one of them has broken hinges, the other one doesn't open and needs to as it is in the bathroom!) - the company who came today said it would cost £2700 if we agreed within the next week
It would have been about £2300 had my husband agreed today but he said no thanks...
Never had windows replaced before so not sure on cost but this seems excessive! I was expecting to pay about £1500. Any ideas? We live in East Anglia if that's of any help.
Shopping around now although having trouble finding anyone who is interested as its a small job.

Try getting a couple of quotes from small local companies - when I needed a (approx) 1800mm x 700mm window replacing last year I got quotes from a couple of larger companies who both sent round smartly dressed salesmen with tablet computers who started off quoting around £1800 before offering endless managers discounts etc. which brought the price down to about £1000 if I signed there and then.
I then got a quote from a well known and respected local firm who sent round an old chap in a boiler suit with a tape measure and a pencil who proceeded to quote me £450 and wouldn't take a deposit from me until he'd written out and posted me a formal quote and contract.
Needless to say, I went with the local firm and am still really pleased with the quality and price of the product.0 -
£500 per window ballpark. Price goes up or down depending on size and number of openers.
They were just quoting you a stupid price. I would not even return their calls. Find 2-3 local companies and get quotes. And haggle. Play them off each other a bit. So even if you only like 1, tell them you are happy with 2 of the companies, so will go with whoever gives you the best price and ask them for a final and best price. Or any other method. But haggle.0 -
£2700 would be about right if you live in the Shard.
In the real world, this is a crazy price0 -
That sounds very high indeed.
I think anything over a grand is a bit much.

Try sourcing the windows yourself from a company like this...

Then a day wage (£120 ish) although will be half a day if that to fit.
I got my windows myself approx 8 including 2 bay windows and then fitted for the price they are charging yourself0 -

Fair comment. The only other point is make sure you are comparing like for like. £2700 seems very steep but are you sure is not high quality, energy efficient, triple glazed unit? Probably not but not all windows are the same quality and that is reflected in the price.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -
Just after the '08 crash I had the house double glazed (just windows) for under £5k. Just made sure the deposit was done by credit card and balance in cash when job was complete.0

Good advice, even better to choose someone who has done a good job for others you know and trust.Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.0 -

That's all you need to know about this company. Pressure sales where the salesman is given carte blanche to make the invoice any figure they like. They are conmen and their fitting and after sales is hardly likely to be any better. Heard loads of stories of windows being fitted with expanding foam only. The customer none the wiser.
A proper company will come round, measure up and then send or leave you with a no obligation quote.0 -
We had a window cut out in a single brick wall, and fit new UPVC window. The price was £360.
Find someone local, also...in your head.. know how much the window costs from B&Q, Wickes, eBay...then your paying for labour..0
