Android 4.2 or 4.3 upwards (cant remember which) support multi user profiles on android. Set up multiple profiles > set unlock password > Problem solved.

You can do this by going to settings then 'Users'

But not on phones, which was the OP's original requirement. See here:

As for "knock yourself out and write a mail application", yeah right, I'm Bill Gates and Steve Jobs all rolled into one

Or, alternatively, any number of kids in their bedrooms.

Android programming is a piece of !!!!: I took students with a fairly minimal knowledge of Java who were not on a degree programme intended for hardcore programmers from scratch to writing a moderately complex navigation application in four one-four lectures, and by the end of eight lectures we'd written a multi-user navigation app on the lines of iPhones "Find my friends", client- and server- side, complete with power-saving modes, use of the compass, pedometer and accelerometer when fitted, etc, etc (and although I am a hardcore programmer, my Java skills are rusty and my Android skills mostly acquired for the occasion). Why are people so obsessed with the idea that programming is hard? Whatever happened to the 1980s, with ubiquitous BBCs and Spectrums and huge numbers of people writing programs?

Why are people so obsessed with the idea that programming is hard?

My OH can speak seven different languages and says it's not hard. They rely on me for arithmetic in the supermarket, though - but I don't think that's hard! Some people find picking up a spider hard. I've always found programming hard, but I did it at University for four years and aced every exam and piece of coursework - all without the ability to program. An ability, I might add, that I'd been trying to acquire for at least ten years prior to University. I find it very hard, because I'm me, a person who finds programming hard.

I don't pretend to know where you're from or the people around you, so maybe it's different for you, but in the places I've been in my life I've noticed that different people seem to have different strengths and abilities.

A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.

Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

Two alternatives, use a different email client app, AquaMail for example is very good and clear and allows you to set up a pin code to access emails. As do probably many others..

Or install an app lock app, not foolproof security but it lets you select specific app and requires the entry of a password before the app runs, including the email app and will prevent casual access. Free too.

I tried the Yahoo app and the Outlook app and neither will allow me to log out once signed in. This is a major security risk as anyone who shares, steals or finds your phone can then read your email and potentially request new passwords for bank accounts etc. which then get sent; guess where?, straight to your email.

The only thing you can do is delete the account from the tablet/phone but that is a difficult option to find and means next time you log in you have to go through pages of setting up the account again. So frustrating and I can't understand why this basic requirement to sign out has not been provided. Anyone know the answer?

Even though many banks will email you to reset your password, there are security checks to jump through BEFORE they will allow you to do it.

So in a worst case scenario: someone gets your phone/tablet, unlocks it, requestes a password reset from your bank and comes across a question like:

"What was your mother's, sisters, brother-in-laws, pet dogs favourite toy called?"

In reality it's something like: what's your mothers maiden name?

Then what do they do? Call your mother and ask?

Online banking and mobile emails are as safe as you make them. Why would you put your private information on a family used tablet anyway? Seems a bit silly to me.

It's not about living in 1993, its about being able to share my tablet/phone with other family members without them being confronted with my personal emails.

Can you not set up a seperate guest account for them to use

On iPads/iPhones/Android there is one possibility to have a private zone on a shared device: Install Mercury Browser. You can set a PIN on it. Once logged in to the browser, any pages you left open (including say, webmail) will still be there. Mercury has a remember password function too for all your web logins.
